

Don Herman, more affectionately known as "PaPa," passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018 at the age of 94. Don was a long time resident of Woodstock, Georgia and had formerly resided in Mesa, Arizona. He was one of a kind - a "legend" in his family's eyes. He had a great sense of humor, was very accepting, enjoyed lending a hand and very thoughtful.
He was a proud Army Air Corps Veteran who served during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a tech sergeant and was one of two survivors on December 4, 1942 when his plane, the Maverick, was shot down. The residents of Canton, Ohio called him a "hero" after learning about his story, as did his family.
After retiring as a mortgage banker, Don worked as a school bus driver. His route would drive past his daughter's home and his granddaughter Kimmy would waive to her PaPa full of happiness.
Don enjoyed traveling cross country and especially loved the dessert. He vacationed with his family in his RV and often took his wife, Kathleen, cruising on his motorcycle. He was proud of his gold wing he bought after retirement.
Don's memory will be cherished by his wife of 55 years, Kathleen Herman of Woodstock, Georgia; son, Robert James Herman of Acworth, Georgia; daughter, Danielle Martin of Acworth, Georgia; grandchildren, Kimmy Moreland and her husband, Brett, of Woodstock, Georgia and Kaitlin Herman of Woodstock, Georgia; great-grandchildren, Ben and Baylee Moreland; son in law, Randy Stewart and his family; sister in law, Connie Wolfe; and several nieces and nephews.
Don is preceded by his parents, George and Mary Herman; brothers, George Herman Sr. and Clarence Haas; sisters, Ethel Kish, Helen Herman, Margaret Herman and Vera Frances Cross.
Don was cremated under the care of Woodstock Funeral Home. A graveside service for Don will be held Friday, February 2, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Veterans Cemetery Road Canton, Georgia 30114, followed by an inurnment. Those who wish to join the family in procession, please meet at Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main Street Woodstock, Georgia 30188, prior to 12:00 PM. Celebration of Life will immediately follow at the family's home.
