Emily Doris Hendrix Goddard, beloved wife of the late Robert Carl Goddard, Jr., and daughter of the late Charles James and Era Blankenship Hendrix, passed away quietly on December 23, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia.
The youngest of five children, Doris was born in Atlanta on November 5, 1930. Soon after, the family moved to Woodstock, Georgia in Cherokee County where they owned a small dairy farm. Doris enjoyed working alongside her father, and her interest and love for animals began to flourish.
In 1947, Doris married Robert Carl Goddard, Jr., a returning WWII Army veteran and son of another old Cherokee County family. They were married for 42 years and were the proud parents of two daughters and one son.
Doris was known for her love of family, her sharp wit, lively sense of humor and great love for all God’s creatures. She delighted in gently nursing wounded wildlife back to health. While maintaining a private and humble lifestyle, she fully captured the image of a strong, southern lady. Although her favorite spot on earth was the home where she and Robert raised their children, she delighted in visiting her beloved North Georgia Mountains and was proud to tell of her once-in-a-lifetime family trip to Europe. Doris will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Doris is survived by her three children, Gayle Goddard Anderson, Carole Goddard Haley (Frank), Robert Carl Goddard, III (Kathi); six grandchildren: Michael Buford Anderson, Nathaniel Goddard Anderson (Sandi); Meg Haley Gerard (Jim), Fran Haley Baldwin (Billy), Lori Haley Thompson (Scott), David Haley (Laura); and nine great-grandchildren: Meredith Anderson; Will, Sydney and Kathryn Anderson; Madeline, Olivia and Sophia Gerard; Sarah Kate and Haley Baldwin.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 27th at the Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main Street, Woodstock 30188. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 28th at Little River Methodist Church, 12455 Highway 92, Woodstock, Georgia 30188. Officiating ministers are Dr. Gil Watson of Northside Methodist Atlanta and Rev. Bill Coady of Little River Methodist Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Homeless Pets Foundation, 365 Villa Rica Way, Marietta, GA 30064 or the Cherokee County Humane Society, 5900 Bells Ferry Road, Acworth, GA 30102.
