He was born May 1, 1944, in Lancaster, South Carolina, and moved to Sandy Springs at a young age. After graduating high school he served briefly in the Marine Corps Reserve before beginning a lifelong career in real estate. George worked as an agent and associate broker and went on to operate a successful home building business for twenty years, building many homes in the East Cobb area.
In November 1970 he married Virginia Maddox; they shared 53 years together until her passing in September 2024. George was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors and especially cherished time with his grandsons. He enjoyed competing in bass tournaments as well as hunting trips with his lifelong best friend Jeff Rozhon; loved good food, and will be remembered for his great stories and warm humor.
He is survived by his daughter, Paige Carnes Burns; grandsons Wesley Burns and Evan Burns; Wesley’s wife, Sydney Burns and great granddaughters, August Burns and Quincey Burns; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Maddox Carnes.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring George’s memory by spending time outdoors with loved ones.
A celebration of life will be held at The Cottages of Woodstock clubhouse on Friday, May 1 from 5 pm to 8 pm.
