George Ogman Hughes

George Ogman Hughes, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, at the age of 76, surrounded by family. George was born on April 25, 1950, in Orme, Tennessee to the late Bertie and George Hughes.

George was a retired employee from the Cobb County School System after 19 years, where he worked as a maintenance man. Although, his first job was back in the coal mines of Tennessee that he worked around 10 years for. He also had a side lawn care business. He was respected for his hard work, committment, and friendships he built throughout his career. He might of also been found sleeping under a shade tree.

Above all else, George loved his family deeply. He was a caring and devoted husband, a proud father, and a very proud Pawpaw to his grandkids, who he spent every moment with. Whether it was sharing stories from the coal mines in Tennessee to fishing the lake or river, George loved his diet coke, cutting the grass but one thing for sure, he would never turn down a peanut butter milkshake. George had a heart of gold and would do anything for anybody, but sometimes he was in instigator when his family. One thing about George, he always made everyone around him feel welcome and part of the family.

George was preceded in death by his son, Jermey (Bug) Hughes, his parents Bertie and George Hughes, and his sister Alice Dickson.

George is survived by his wife, Debra Hughes, his son, Robert Hughes (Kim); his two daughters Amanda Fretwell (Brian), and Jessica Martin; his five grandchildren Kaylee Hughes, Lindey Hughes, Cody Martin, Ryker Fretwell, Wyatt Fretwell; his sisters Mary Morrison, Teresa Mayfield, and Gilda Henderson; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members who will miss him dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 30, 2026, from 1-4 pm at Palmer Middle School. Palmer Middle School, 690 North Booth Road NW, Kennesaw, Ga. 30144.

George wouldn't want us to cry over him; he would want us to gather and have a great time in his memory.
