

Tom was born on March 16, 1940, in Wilmington, Delaware, to Ella Ruth Schoffner and Gilbert Thomas George Sr. At the age of five, his family moved to California, where he spent his childhood before enlisting in the U.S. Army at 18.
A dedicated serviceman, Tom had an illustrious 22-year military career, rising to the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He honorably served in Korea, completed two tours in Vietnam, was stationed in Germany, and served at numerous posts stateside. Tom was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice.
Following his military retirement, Tom continued his commitment to public service by joining the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). His exceptional skills and dedication led to high case resolution rates, earning him the distinction of being called to testify before Congress. After another 22 years of service, he retired as a Taxpayer Advocate.
Even in retirement, Tom remained active. He found joy in camping, fishing, hunting, antiquing, painting, and photography. Alongside his beloved wife, Wanda, he spent two decades as an antique dealer, fully embracing the history and stories behind cherished collectibles. In 2025, after a lifetime of dedication and hard work, Tom retired for the third and final time.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert Thomas George Sr. and Ella Ruth Schoffner (George); his sisters, Dorothy Devine and Betty Harris; and his grandson, Glen Johnson.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Wanda, and their children, William David George, Cynthia Faye Gallegos (George), Ila Marie Wilcox (George), Gilbert Thomas George III.
Tom’s legacy continues through his grandchildren, Olivia Young, Alena Stuhmer, April Gevara, Erin Lambson, Christopher Wilcox, Kelby George, Hannah George. He was also blessed to be survived by great-grandchildren: Kyla Mikaelsen, Levi Young, Macy Vance, Michael Stuhmer, Madelyn Gevara, Elli Gevara, Addison Stuhmer, Colin Lambson, and his cherished great-great-grandchild, Braxton Mikaelsen.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main Street, Woodstock, Georgia.
A service for Tom will be Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 12:00pm in the Chapel at Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main Street, Woodstock, Georgia. Following the service, Tom will be laid to rest at 2:00pm at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, Georgia with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization dedicated to supporting veterans and their families—an honor fitting of Tom’s lifetime of service.
Tom was a man of integrity, resilience, and warmth, whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
