Born on November 24, 1945, in Rome, Georgia, to Millard and Effie Womack-Griffith, Herman came from humble beginnings. He quickly stood out for both his academic talents and athletic abilities, especially excelling in baseball, which he played throughout high school and beyond.
Herman attended Southern Polytechnic State University, where he earned a degree in architecture. He went on to establish his own successful home-building business and spent over 30 years helping shape the metro Atlanta area.
In the 1970s, Herman joined a local softball league and continued playing in Leagues in Georgia and Florida until a few short years ago, fostering a lifelong love of the game. After retiring at the age of 55, he dedicated himself to traveling and living life to its fullest. Herman was also an Atlanta Braves fan and rarely missed watching a game.
Herman was a member of Mt. Paran Church of God and held a deep, unwavering faith in the Lord. He lived with the peace of knowing he was going to heaven.
Above all else, Herman loved his family. He was a proud father, grandfather, and loving husband to his late wife, Judy Rutkowski-Griffith, who passed away in 2024. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Effie Griffith; and his beloved sister, Joyce Griffith, who affectionately called him "Buddy," and passed away in 2011.
He is survived by his two daughters: Regina Moody of Canton, Georgia, and Renae Daws and her husband Scott Daws of Kennesaw, Georgia; twelve grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren: Stacy Burnotes, Sean Burnotes, and Scott Burnotes and his wife Katherine. He also had a special place in his heart for his loyal dog, Wiley, who was his constant companion.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main Street, Woodstock, Georgia. A reception will follow, where friends and family are invited to visit and share memories.
