Born on January 12, 1933, to Thomas Clyde and Guynelle Serena (Hall) Fowler, Gene grew up in Woodstock and attended Woodstock Elementary School and Canton High School.
In 1955, he joined the United States Navy through the Buddy System program alongside his close friend, Hunter Ingram. After receiving an honorable discharge, Gene began a long and dedicated career at Lockheed in Marietta.
During the summer of 1960, Gene was introduced to Jean Ritter during a boating trip on Lake Allatoona. They married on January 27, 1961, at his parents’ home. Gene built their family home on Highway 92, where they raised their two children, Lisa and Howard.
After Jean’s passing in 1987, Gene retired early from Lockheed after 35 years of service. Over the next 39 years, he devoted himself to family, friends, gardening, and traveling. He was a proud and loving grandfather to his three grandchildren: Serena, Jesse, and JT.
Gene was a lifelong member of the Woodstock community and cherished the friendships he built over many decades. One of his favorite gathering spots was the Burger Inn in Woodstock, where his friends honored him with a plaque at his table reading “Gene’s Corner.”
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Ritter Fowler; his brother, Thomas “Tom” Fowler; and his parents, Thomas Clyde and Guynelle Fowler.
He is survived by his children, Lisa Fowler and Howard (Melissa) Fowler, and his grandchildren Serena Huskey, Jesse Huskey, and James “JT” Fowler.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sequoyah Regional Library System (Canton) or New Salem Baptist Church (Kennesaw) in Gene’s memory.
