In the quiet hours of a February morning, Jann Klinger slipped peacefully away in her sleep, ending a life as vibrant and unconventional as she was. But her story began long before this moment - in Duluth, Minnesota, where Alfred and Vera Fabeck welcomed their daughter on February 1, 1942.
Music first captured her heart in the halls of Hudsons Bay High School, where she discovered the flute and the joy of marching in the band. Her love for melody would become a lifelong companion, eventually leading her to rock concerts with her son Josh and with daughter-in-law Danah, where the thunderous sounds of Foo Fighters and AC/DC would fill her soul.
Life took her on a wandering path - from Washington to the Virgin Islands, then to Portland, Oregon, where she raised three sons: Chris, Jeff, and Josh. She was no ordinary mother. She studied nursing, shocked her boys by taking up fencing, and when they asked what would happen if she got stabbed, her perpetual response was a classic Jann shrug: "I can't imagine."
Her home was her kingdom. In Bellevue, Washington, she was the quintessential sports mom, braving cold and rain to watch her sons play baseball. In Atlanta, she discovered her true love: Venice, Italy. "The first time we went there, I sat on the hotel balcony overlooking a canal and cried at the beauty," she would recount.
Jann lived boldly. Her downtown Atlanta condo was a testament to her personality - painted entirely green, kept warm against her perpetual chill, ruled by her motto: "My house, my rules." She walked Peachtree Street daily, collecting stories like others collect souvenirs - befriending homeless individuals, charming security guards, narrowly avoiding electric scooters, and once triumphantly carrying a 10-foot 2x4 home for a peculiar home improvement.
She swore like a sailor, loved fiercely, and was, as one nurse described her, "a total badass" - a woman who drove a 6-speed Porsche 911 and lived life entirely on her own terms.
Her legacy lives on in her sons, who learned to cook, clean, and care for others, and in her grandchildren: Cam, Kennerly, Cosette, Carlina, Clara, and Vera. They will remember her spice, her laugh, and the unbreakable spirit of a woman who was truly, wonderfully unique.
A celebration of Jann's life will be announced at a later date.
