OBITUARY
Dr John Alves Hofmann
September 25, 1946 – May 1, 2019
Dr. John A. Hofmann, a chiropractor who lived for decades in Southgate, Michigan and resided in Woodstock, Georgia in his retirement, passed away peacefully at home with his wife, Edie Hofmann early on the morning of May 1, 2019. Dr. Hofmann is survived by his wife Edie Hofmann of Woodstock, Georgia, a daughter, Dr. Wende Rupolo of West Palm Beach, Florida, a son, Dr. John Hofmann, Jr. of Allen Park, Michigan, four grandchildren and a cousin, Mr. William Kotzum of Illinois.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, the only child of John and Ruth Hofmann. Dr. Hofmann’s life was shaped, in part by his father’s political activism serving as mayor of Lyons, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. Dr. Hofmann went on to graduate from Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri in 1968 at the height of the Viet Nam War. Shortly after completing his chiropractic education Dr. Hofmann was drafted into the U.S. Marines. He served one tour of duty in Viet Nam encountering extensive combat and was exposed to warfare-related agents that would ultimately contribute to a decline in his health.
Following an honorable discharge from the Marines, Dr. Hofmann sought licensure to practice chiropractic in Michigan and in 1972 he established his first office in Allen Park, Michigan. Upon his retirement from active practice Dr. Hofmann’s son, John, now a chiropractor himself, assumed the responsibilities of his father’s practice.
Over the course of his career Dr. Hofmann was very active on a state and national level in the affairs of the chiropractic profession. His father’s political involvement and experience was harnessed by Dr. Hofmann as he served as a founder, and in the leadership, of the Michigan Chiropractic Council (MCC) and then of the Michigan Association of Chiropractors (MAC). He also served, as a result of a gubernatorial appointment, as a member of the state regulatory board for the chiropractic profession in Michigan, the Michigan State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. His involvement with the Michigan State Board of Chiropractic Examiners led to his efforts on a national level as a representative of the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) serving on the Commission on Accreditation (COA) of the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), the U.S. Secretary of Education approved accrediting body for educational programs awarding the Doctor of Chiropractic (D,C.) degree. He ultimately went on to serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the COA.
Dr. Hofmann enjoyed tremendous success in private practice ultimately developing one of the premier chiropractic practices in the United States in Allen Park, Michigan. He was a gifted speaker, counselor and mentor who was welcomed to conferences and conventions across the country and around the world. Over the years hundreds of recent chiropractic graduates spent months to years interning in Dr. Hofmann’s office where he was able to shape their careers in a very hands-on manner.
One of his greatest passions in life apart from his family, was Life Chiropractic College which he helped found in 1974 in Marietta, Georgia. He offered his time, treasure and talent to see the College grow into Life University and went on to serve as a senior adviser to every president of Life University. Along the way, he had the pleasure of seeing his daughter, Wende and his son, John earn their Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degrees from the institution he worked so hard to establish.
Dr. John Hofmann, the chiropractor and John Hofmann, the U.S. Marine were never far apart. The ethos of the Marine Corps, Semper fidelis, always faithful, was with him throughout his entire adult life. One of his proudest personal and professional experiences was testifying before the Congress of the United States advocating for the health care needs, including chiropractic care, of the active duty military and Veterans of the United States.
Dr. Hofmann was repeatedly honored by state and national chiropractic organizations, including being recognized as the Chiropractor of the Year by the International Chiropractors Association. In 2018, Dr. Hofmann received perhaps the highest honor of his lengthy and storied career as he was awarded a Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities (H.C.D.), honoris causa, by Life University. An honor the University has awarded less than 10 times in its history.
Come celebrate the Life of John A. Hofmann, D.C., H.C.D. at Life University Sports Health Science building lower gym on Thursday, July 25th at 11:00 am.

I heard Dr. John speak at DE many times over the years. He was truly an encouragement to young Chiropractors everywhere. He personally replied with a handwritten card to a letter of thanks I sent him years ago. He signed off, “Keep the Faith, Turn the Crank, and Testify.” Indeed. He was Giant, and I miss him dearly.

John was my friend first as a chiropractor and second as a fellow Vietnam veteran marine. John was always faithful to all of his friends being first to give and share.
We will all miss him greatly.

My life—and the lives of countless other people—were changed because of John Hofmann. He lived out loud. Spoke his mind. Defied the odds. Slew the dragons.
John was one-of-a-kind. His impact will continue to be felt long after his transition. His memory will not be lost.
What a joy it was to have him with us. His wit, charm, humor were infectious. His resolve, persistence and determination were legend. He was a truly great man.
He now belongs to history—and history is lucky to have him.

To Edie and family;
I was saddened to hear of John's passing. I will always remember his strength and leadership in the chiropractic profession. I first met John while working on the merger that formed the powerful Michigan Association of Chiropractors. I always appreciated his quick wit, his strong advice, and his willingness to serve. Our profession lost a great man, but his legacy will live on!
