John Patrick Kofoed was born on August 12, 1927 at home in Mineola, New York to Christian and Mary Ellen Donoghue Kofoed. He completed his education through high school and enlisted in the Merchant Marines. He served in the US Army from 1946-1949 and in the Reserves from 1949-1952. After his discharge, he worked at the United Nations as a security guard.
He married Elizabeth (Betty) Koch in February 1951 and raised three children, taking great pride in them achieving college degrees. Upon retirement, they relocated to Timber Greens in New Port Richey to enjoy the warmer climate and active social life of their retirement community. He was a committed bowler, golfer, boater and carpenter. He was active in his church. In 2005, he and Betty relocated to Woodstock, Georgia to be closer to family.
He declared himself a “loner” but was never alone. He always had a smile, a joke or a helping hand. His positive outlook and generous nature drew people in and made them feel special. He was loved by many and will be missed. He is survived by his children Cynthia Dombeck (son-in-law Harold), Christine Kofoed and John Kofoed (son-in-law Fernando Segatelli) as well as his grandson David Dombeck, his wife Elise and their children Jackson, Sloane and Colette.
John Kofoed will be laid to rest at the Georgia National Cemetery in a private ceremony on Monday, December 7th. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation (michaeljfox.org) for Parkinson’s research or to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Woodstock, GA (gslutheran.org).
There will be no public visitation due to Covid restrictions. All services are for immediate family only.
