It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Richard Boswinkle and his beloved wife, Penny Sue McMahan Boswinkle, who passed away peacefully just days apart. Penny died on October 23, 2025, and John followed her on November 6, 2025.
John, born on July 28, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, was known for his passion for woodworking and his enjoyment of sports. He was a proud Eagle Scout who volunteered countless hours mentoring Boy Scouts though his mid-20ies. Throughout most of his life, there were few tasks that he would not first try to handle himself before allowing anyone else to assist him. Not a person of many words, when he did speak it was deep, sincere and always logical.
Penny, born on May 6, 1942 in Albion, Michigan, had a true gift for needlepoint and cross-stitching. With each careful stitch, she poured her heart into her work, creating pieces that told stories of patience, beauty, and love. As a longtime member of the American Needlepoint Guild, she found not only inspiration but also dear friends who shared her passion for the craft.
Those who knew Penny will remember her for her gentle nature, her thoughtful spirit, and her ability to make everyone around her feel loved and welcomed – including trying to be a mother to everyone who wanted or needed that. She found joy in the little things — a warm conversation, a coca cola over ice, and time spent with the people she cherished most.
John and Penny’s remarkable journey together began at Michigan State University, where they met and both graduated. They built a beautiful life after marrying on September 26, 1964. They are survived by their devoted sons, Richard and David, and their three cherished grandsons, John, Thomas, and James.
Their legacy is one of unwavering love, dedication to family, and the pursuit of lifelong interests. Though they will both be deeply missed, their legacy continues in the hearts and hands of those they touched.
A dual funeral service will be held to celebrate the lives of John and Penny at Winters Chapel United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 15th. A visitation will be held beginning at 10:00 am, followed by the service at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in their memory to the Friends of the Dunwoody Library, a cause close to Penny's heart and both of them were avid readers.
May they rest in eternal peace together.
