John Augusta Sweeney, 79, of Woodstock, Georgia, passed away on November 6, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, New York on August 7, 1946, to John and Florence Sweeney, he lived a life marked by serving his country, volunteering in the communities where he lived, and traveling with his loved ones.
John served with distinction in Vietnam from 1968-1969, where he was wounded in combat. His bravery earned him a Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.
Beyond his military service, John volunteered at church and in the communities where he lived, repeatedly serving on neighborhood boards. You were just as likely to see John pulling into the parking lot of his favorite Thai restaurant in a sports car as you were to catch him watching his grandson, Ethan, playing baseball and basketball. “Papa” was a fixture at any and all of his games.
While John was a man of few words, he loved spending time with friends and family, from frequent trips to Hawaii to breakfasts at the Waffle House and playing poker with the guys to bowling with dear friends and watching Barney Miller to collecting signed books.
John is survived by the love of his life and wife of 55 years, Patricia; his daughter, Lee; his son, John; his son-in-law, Jason; grandsons, Ethan and Eduard.
In lieu of flowers or trees, John ardently supported Tunnels to Towers, so donations to this charity, which supports veterans, would have made him smile.http://t2t.org
