John William Vernon Jr. passed away peacefully on May 17, 2020 at the age of 80. John was born August 27, 1939 in Kansas City, Kansas to parents, John W. and Darlene Vernon. He was the oldest of three sons. John graduated from Luther Academy in Wahoo Nebraska. In 1961 he joined the Army and spent his time on an intelligence post in Germany. He was able to travel throughout Europe in his two years and created many wonderful memories. John worked at The University of Missouri, Kansas City, where he met the love of his life, Jeanie. The two married July 16, 1966 and were married for 53 years, prior to her death. John had a career in paints, stains, and lacquers, working for Colony Paints, Sherwin Williams, and Campbell Coatings. John retired from Campbell Coatings in 2005. On Jeanie’s retirement in 2013, they moved to Woodstock Georgia, to be near their daughter and grandsons. John loved golf and played as often as he could. After he moved to Georgia, he began working as a golf marshal at Bradshaw Farms. He loved seeing the golfers and getting to play such a fantastic course. He loved wine, the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas City Chiefs. He was so excited when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl this year. He never missed a Jayhawk Basketball game and was so excited that one of my friend’s sons played on the team. It made him feel more connected. Dad and I attended many wine classes and tastings at the Gifted Ferret. We made many happy memories over glasses of wine. John was an avid Scouter throughout his entire life and served in Scoutmaster Positions, committee positions, and District Commissioner for the Heart of America Council. When his first grandson joined Scouts, John was ready and eager to be a part of it. He and Zachary built Pinewood Derby cars, participated in cake bake-offs (which they won multiple times) and spent many summers at camp. When his youngest grandson joined Cub Scouts, he joined the committee in various jobs, and served as Committee Chairman of the Pack. John loved and adored his two grandsons. You couldn’t find a prouder Pa (the name they gave him). They were his world. He didn’t miss a football game where Zachary marched in the band and he was at every track meet Shawn participated in. He thoroughly enjoyed all their event and concerts. John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Jeanie Vernon. He is survived by his daughter Lara Anne and son-in-law, Mike Cole of Woodstock, GA, grandsons, Zachary Schulz and Shawn Cole, brothers Robert (Jan) Vernon of Lenexa KS, Charles (Kathleen) Vernon of Kalispell, MT, favorite sister-in-laws, Kay and Jody, and many nieces and nephews. Services at Woodstock Funeral Home with private committal services at The Georgia National Cemetery, Canton GA. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis TN.
