Lyda Jo B. Russell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, November 21, 1934 to John Maurice and Thelma Candace Lee Boswell. Lyda Jo Boswell was educated in the public schools of Pittsburgh and completed a year at the University of Pittsburgh. She entered the Irwin Avenue School of Practical Nursing and after graduation married James D. Tucker of Paris, Kentucky. Of this union she became the proud mother of James D. Tucker, II, Barbara Jo, and Jon Maurice.
In 1960 the family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. While in Minnesota, Lyda Jo was the office manager for the medical practice of Martin, England, and Bostivick for 20 years. She returned to Pittsburgh in 1983 and married John E. Trower until his death in February of 2000. In 1985, at the request of Leon Haley of the Urban League, Lyda Jo volunteered, then was employed by the Urban League of Pittsburgh, Inc. until she retired in 1997 as Director of Minority Elderly Outreach and Development. In October 2003, Lyda Jo and Reverend Robert Russell were married in The Church of the Holy Cross.
Lyda Jo was an active member of the Church of the Holy Cross, a charter member of Club 21 and the S.E.T. (Sisters Eternally Together), and a member of The Pittsburgh Pioneers.
In August of 2017 Lyda Jo moved to Cumming, Georgia to live with her daughter Barbara Jo and family. Lyda Jo B. Russell is preceded in death by her parents, her two older brothers Robert W. Boswell (Bobby), Carlton L. Boswell, and sister Barbara Ann Boswell Ricketts.
Cherishing her memory are sister-in-law Cecelia Epperson (David), children James D. Tucker (Catherine), Barbara Jo Snow (Bernard), and Jon M. Tucker (Joy). Grandchildren Carmen, Jaymie, and Bernie Snow, Jade and Jordan Tucker, many nieces, nephews and loving friends.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held Saturday, January 19, 2019, 11:00 AM-2:00 PM at 7425 Ramsgate Ct., Cumming, GA 30040, the home of her daughter Barbara Jo Snow.
