

She was born to John William Mercer and Oprah Goldie Brickhouse Mercer on December 14, 1927 in Greenville, North Carolina. Margarette had one brother, John, deceased, and is survived by one sister, Edna.
After the death of her first husband, Carl Henry Altenburg Sr., Margarette raised their seven children alone for ten years.
In 1965, she married Leamon O. Bateman. They had a son together and their family later grew to include many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Margarette returned to school in 1975, and became a Registered Nurse and worked for Dekalb General Hospital, Georgia Baptist Hospital, NurseFinders, and worked as a private care giver, until 1995.
She was devoted to her faith in the Roman Catholic Church all of her life. She was an avid reader who enjoyed spending time with her extensive family, sewing and cooking. She also had a love for the outdoors and gardening.
Margarette is preceded in death by her husband, Carl H. Altenburg Sr.; sons, Carl H. Altenburg Jr. and Richard J. Altenburg; daughter, Mary Anne Hanlin; parents, John and Goldie Mercer; brother, John W. Mercer, one grandchild and one great-grandchild. She is survived by her sister, Edna Ammecucci of San Antonio, Texas; her husband, Leamon O. “Doc” Bateman of Marietta, Georgia; children, Laurence M. Altenburg Sr. and his wife, Kathy, of Rotonda West, Florida, Theresa Dankenbrink of Massapequa, New York, Kevin F. Altenburg of Lubbock, Texas, Monica Gwinn and her husband, Wesley, of Marietta, Georgia, and Roni-John Bateman and his wife, Viv of St. Neots, England; 15 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 4, 2016 from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Woodstock Funeral Home in Woodstock, Georgia. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am Monday, December 5, 2016 at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock, Georgia. A Reception will be held at Woodstock Funeral Home’s Event Center followed by a burial at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, donations for Masses to be said for the happy repose of her soul are requested through the Trinity Missions, 9001 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20903-3626, of which her husband is a member.
