Martha Grace German Smith was born on May 27, 1934, in Evansville, Indiana, to Henry and Frances German. She fell asleep in death on February 15, 2024, in Woodstock, Georgia, at the age of 89. Martha married Felix “Smitty” Smith on May 22, 1956, and was mother to Thomas Ray Smith; Lynne Rachel; Allyn Smith, and his wife, Bertha; David Smith, and his wife, Jill; and Stephen Smith, and his wife, Sherry. She had 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Martha also loved Jill Swann Smith and Robert Main as her own children. She regarded her closest friends as part of her family, among whom are Lionel and Beatrice White; Jerry and Caroline O’Dell; Bobbie Langlois; and Dale Adams.
Martha was a natural beauty. That was recognized by many from the time she flashed that beautiful smile in her first Coca-Cola ad at three years old to the last one she gave her beloved husband, Smitty. Martha met Smitty while working the ticket counter at a local movie theater in Tacoma, Washington. They were married in the spring of 1956 and spent 68 years together.
One Sunday as Martha and Smitty were on a walk with the family, they passed the local Kingdom Hall and decided to go in. Together they began studying the Bible and were baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses on April 11, 1958, in Lumberton, North Carolina. Martha’s greatest love was for her heavenly Father, Jehovah. She was a zealous Bible ‘scholar’ as was evident in her personal expressions and heartfelt comments at congregation meetings. Martha was devoted to her volunteer ministry and spent countless hours teaching others about the wonderful promises contained in the Bible. As a skilled pianist, she played at congregation meetings and was part of the orchestra at assemblies and conventions.
Martha was an example of the “capable wife” described at Proverbs 31:10-31. She was a skilled teacher and shared her passion for sewing, crocheting, baking, gardening, music, calligraphy, and even table etiquette with her family and friends. Martha was also an accomplished seamstress, making many elegant wedding gowns and dresses for her daughters-in-law and granddaughters. Many still have afghans that she crocheted with love and skill. And her pound cake was legendary.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 1:30pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses 2369 S Cherokee Lane, Woodstock, GA 30188. The service will also be live streamed via Zoom.
