Raymond Marvin Newby

June 20, 1940February 20, 2021

Raymond Marvin Newby was born June 20, 1940 in Granville County, NC. He is a graduate of Stovall High School there, where he starred on the varsity basketball team along with his younger brother Billy. Upon graduation, he moved to Richmond, VA, marrying his wife of almost 60 years, Carline Taylor Newby, in 1961. He worked at the railroad for a time, and he attended the University of Richmond, where he earned an Associate Degree in Transportation. He then began a long career in management for various trucking and logistics companies. His work took him from Richmond to Tacoma, WA and then to Coral Springs, FL, where he and Carline resided for over 35 years.

Raymond traveled extensively all over the United States with his family. His other interests included sports (the Miami Heat, the Florida Gators, and the Atlanta Braves) and he, his son Michael, and his grandson John Michael assembled and displayed an impressive collection of Lionel Trains. Raymond and Carline also especially loved spending time with their daughter Kathryn’s family at their homes on Key Largo, FL and Beech Mountain, NC. He took great joy in his grandchildren, Lauren, Davey, and John Michael.

Raymond passed away in Marietta, GA on February 20, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father Raymond Harding Newby, his mother Doris Matthews, his step-mother Eula “Sally” Newby, and his brother Larry Thomas Newby. He is survived by his wife Carline Taylor Newby, his brother William Charles “Billy” Newby (Barbara), his sisters June Carol Newby Mostoway, Ginger Newby Morris (Stevie), and Lisa Newby Carver (Brad), his sister-in-law Shirley Newby, his son Michael Harding Newby (Cheryl), his daughter Kathryn Newby Celentano (David) and his grandchildren Lauren Haslett Celentano (Oliver), David William Celentano, Jr (Lindsay) and John Michael Newby. He is also survived by nephews William C. Newby, Jr (Christine), Landrum Carver, and Jacob Carver, niece Renee Newby Daniels (Clay) and niece Tracy May Newby.

The family would also like to acknowledge all of Raymond’s wonderful in-laws, the Taylor family. Due to the ongoing COVID19 pandemic, burial will be private and memorial service arrangements will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Raymond’s honor may be made to the MDE School in Marietta, GA, to Autism Speaks, or to the American Cancer Society.

Carline, Kathryn, David, Michael, Cheryl, Lauren, Davey and John Michael,
Our family feels very blessed to have shared such wonderful memories with your family over the years. Marvin was so proud of all of you and it was quite evident that family is what he treasured and enjoyed most in life. I first met Marvin when I was working with Carline. Marvin and Carline shared stories of their kids and they both beemed. Marvin was such a proud father of the bride when Kathryn married David and was an even prouder grandfather. I loved sharing in your family gatherings. Marvin had the most wonderful laugh and he laughed often when he was with all of you. We are very sorry for your loss. Our thoughts are with all of you. Love, Jane & Tom, Colleen, Joseph, Carolyn and Jack

Our continued prayers are with you all.
We love each of you & ask that God give each of you strength in the difficult days ahead.
So many memories of Marvin! I loved his sense of humor most. His laughter was contagious. He could really get Mama going for sure. Especially since he knew her fear of heights. The swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain & the deck on back of the Mountain home!
Camping trips to the mountains & at Nutbush Lake & Hibernia when we were younger. He loved Mama’s chocolate pie & my Honey Bun cake. He loved his veggies from the garden, especially corn & crowder peas.
I, like Lisa, have heard him call Carline’s name a million times. I’ll never forget the summer they visited with David, Kathryn, Carline, Lauren & Davey. We introduced June bugs to the kids by tying them on strings & letting the kids fly them. Marvin thought that was hilarious!
Carline & Marvin were like one person.
God definitely knew what he was doing when he placed them together.
Michael & Kathryn, we have so many childhood memories together & I am thankful for them all! Stevie sends his love as well. He enjoyed Marvin so much.
Love you all!

Thinking of you all! We are sending our hugs, love and prayers. Please know we are here for you all. We loved Marvin very much! The boys have lots of memories of him picking on them. We still say when the Gators aren't doing good we can hear Marvin fussing in Florida. We can hear him now, "Carline go fix my plate" or "Carline go get me a slice of pie." He and Carline were an example of what a happy marriage should be. Love you all! Lisa, Brad, Landrum and Jacob
Favorite memory family camping trips to Loft Mountain and roasting the marshmallows.
