Pilot, Baseball Fan, Friend
Richard "Dick" Burns, 83, passed away on October 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, loyalty, and an unwavering love for America's pastime.
Dick spent his career in the skies as a commercial pilot, flying for Eastern Airlines and Kiwi International. After hanging up his wings, he trained Delta pilots in the flight simulator for several years.
When he wasn't in the cockpit or the simulator, you could find Dick with a baseball game on television—preferably the Atlanta Braves, though he'd happily watch any team play. His love of the game was matched only by his passion for reading and the deep friendships he cultivated throughout his life. Dick treasured his friends above all else, and they knew him as fiercely loyal, if occasionally curmudgeonly—a trait that only added to his charm.
Dick is survived by his son, Scott Burns (Tina); his daughter, Evi Craig (Michael); grandchildren Jackson, Ali, Spencer, and Rees; great-granddaughter Jordan; and his brother Larry Burns (Terry). He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Athol, and his son, Kenneth (“Bubba”).
Those who knew Dick will remember a man who lived on his own terms, who valued genuine connection, and who never missed a chance to catch a ballgame. And, if his Geezer pals were nearby, his life was full.
