Robert Ray Elliott, Sr. (Bob), passed away on May 8th, at the age of 88 years. He was a resident of Sterling Estates Assisted Living, in east Cobb County. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Emogene McDaniel Elliott, his parents Bernard Elliott and Martha Shuford Elliott, and his siblings Lucille Searcy, Earl Elliott, Marie Nelson, Pete (LB) Elliott and Dean Elliott. He is survived by his son Rob Elliott, his daughter-in-law Terry Rich Elliott, and his granddaughter, Erika Rich Elliott.
Bob and Emogene met in the first grade at Pleasant Gardens School in Marion, NC. At the age of 16, Bob drove the school bus for Pleasant Gardens. Bob and Emogene graduated from Pleasant Gardens in 1951, after which Bob joined the Air Force. Within a year of joining the Air Force, Bob was assigned to the Air Training Command as a jet engine maintenance/repair technical instructor. After completing his four years with the Air Force in 1955, he started work as a C-130 production mechanic for Lockheed-Georgia Company in Marietta. He and Emogene were married later that same year. In 1988, Bob retired from Lockheed as flight line division manager on the C-5B program.
Bob had many interests. He and Emogene enjoyed travelling in the US and Canada for some years in their motor coach. Bob loved tinkering with cars, especially Volkswagens, and also had a deep interest in clocks, which was part of his family heritage since his father was an accomplished watch maker. He once used a plastic toy cog from his son's tinker toy set to repair an elegant grandfather clock which he proudly displayed in his home. He also had a lifelong interest in airplanes, and once participated in restoration of the famous "Glacier Girl" P-38 from World War II. Throughout the early 2000's, Bob was very active as a volunteer with the Aviation History and Technology Center of Marietta. Bob also loved being social and eating out with friends. Bob's family was especially important to him as well, and he was very proud of his son and granddaughter, both of whom are employed as engineers in the aerospace industry.
A memorial service for Bob will be held at the Mountain View Community Center (3400 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta) on September 24th, 2022 at 2:30 PM.
Donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Aviation History and Technology Center of Marietta.
