Susan "Sue" Helene Herman

Mrs. Susan “Sue” Helene Herman, age 80, of Woodstock, passed away peacefully while sleeping. Having been raised mainly by her religious Methodist grandmothers, she was a deep believer that Jesus was her Savior.

Sue Herman was born on December 30, 1945, in Palatine, Illinois, the only child of John Richard Estes and Helen Beatrice Estes (Gandy). She was raised on a 7-10 acre farm off Rand Road in Palatine until the family moved during her high school years to Eau Claire, Wisconsin. She was valedictorian of Eau Claire High School.

When she was 19, she met her future husband, Lee Herman, at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. During her freshman year, she heard there was a gentleman running for office in Student Government and there was some free food in the lobby of her dormitory. She went downstairs when she was approached by the aspiring politician, Lee. After some polite conversation, she went upstairs and told her roommate she had heard “wedding bells” and just met the man she was going to marry. Six weeks later, they were engaged and six months later, they were married on June 11, 1966, in East Palatine, Illinois at the United Church of Christ. After two years of college, Sue’s family could no longer afford to pay for college and she started working at Dayton Hudson’s, a retail store, to support her husband finish school as an accountant. Sue later returned to school and finished her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business at Kennesaw State University.

After Lee graduated from the University of Wisconsin with an Accounting degree, he accepted a job offer from IBM and they moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where their son, Joe, was born in 1969. After a terrible blizzard higher than their duplex’s rooftop during the winter of 1969/1970, they decided to get away from the snow and moved June 1970, to Marietta, Georgia, where they resided and Elizabeth (Beth) was born in 1972 until June of 1990 and moved to Woodstock, Georgia.

During the early years of their marriage, Sue was a housewife, enjoying raising her two children, attending the garden club of her neighborhood, cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, knitting and traveling with the family to the beach, to visit relatives, and a month long trip to the western United States to visit a vast number of National Parks.

The next chapter of her life, she turned to starting a career as a stockbroker which later turned into her building her own financial planning business, Herman & Associates. She felt it was her God given mission to help all walks of life find their financial freedom and peace. She loved her “calling.” Additionally, Sue and Lee joined about 8 other individuals as founders of the United Church of Christ off Sandy Plains Road in Marietta, Georgia. Later, the family decided to return to the Presbyterian Church.

Sue was a big Atlanta Braves baseball fan, University of Georgia Football and Auburn Football fan, too. She also watched all the major tennis tournaments on TV and was especially happy to

have attended the Olympics tennis games with her husband. She was an avid player of tennis, having reached the highest rank in ALTA in women’s singles. As a family, they enjoyed camping and boating on Lake Allatoona.

Preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy “Lee” Joseph Herman, a son, Joseph John Herman, a mother and a father, as well as her favorite childhood horse, Misty, and several loved cats, horses and dogs.

Survived by a daughter, Elizabeth A. Herman Stana, daughter-in-law, Denise Herman, grandchildren Mary Herman, Max Herman, Savannah Stana, a brother-in-law, Joe Herman and his wife, Kay Herman, nieces and nephews and beloved neighbors.

The family wishes to thank the entire loving staff at The Reserve and Family Hospice, especially Tracy and Gizzelle, who cared for mother like family.
