Thelma was raised in a Christian home, and faith was the foundation of her life from the very beginning. She was enrolled in Sunday School at just six weeks old and remained devoted to the Lord throughout her life. Even after her family moved, she faithfully rode one bus and transferred to another in order to attend church. At the age of 15, Thelma accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and later followed in believer’s baptism at Capitol View Baptist Church.
Thelma graduated from Bass High School and married seven months later. After the birth of her two children, she devoted ten years to being a stay-at-home mother. She later began a successful 22-year career in banking, where she advanced from an IBM proof operator to Assistant Branch Manager—an accomplishment of which she was especially proud.
While Thelma valued her professional accomplishments, her greatest joys were found in her faith and family. Among her proudest moments were the births of her son and daughter and, even more importantly to her, the days they each accepted Christ as their Savior. Her joy continued with the births of her granddaughter, great-grandson, and great-great-granddaughter.
Thelma faithfully served the Lord for many years and in many ministries. Throughout her life, she served as a Sunday School teacher, Teen Department Director, Missions Director, Vacation Bible School leader, nursery worker, WMU President, Bible study teacher at retreats, and a faithful prayer warrior.
Thelma was an active and devoted member of Mt. Zion Church in Canton, Georgia, where she participated in Sunday School, the Adult Christmas Choir, and a weekly small-group Bible study known as D-Group. She was also a member of the Ladies Homemaker Sunday School Class.
In 2020, Thelma was a key member of the group that began Mt. Zion Ladies on a Mission, which raised thousands of dollars to help children and families in need. She was especially active in the annual Mt. Zion Dental Clinic, which provided dental care to adults in need while sharing the love of God.
One of Thelma’s most meaningful ministries was establishing a group of ladies who created one-of-a-kind, handmade birthday cards for homebound adults. A talented artist, she also created beautiful paintings that she generously donated to Mt. Zion Sunday School classes and Ladies on a Mission to help raise money for their ministries and projects.
Thelma also loved to bake and often prepared and delivered food to those who were sick, elderly, or homebound. Whether she was nursing someone through an illness or surgery, offering a listening ear, praying for someone in need, or simply being present, Thelma was always willing to help. She loved deeply and served others with kindness and compassion.
Above all else, Thelma’s life was centered on her relationship with Jesus Christ. She dearly loved her Lord, her family, and her friends, and her life was a testimony of faithful service, generosity, and love.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Curtis Wiggins; her son, Carlton Garner; and her parents, Thomas and Thelma Dobbs.
She is survived by her daughter, Stacey Garner; sister, Carolyn Phillips; daughter-in-law, Lynn Garner; granddaughter, Wendy; great-grandson, Riley; one great-great-granddaughter, and his nephews Chuck, Ron, Greg, along with family members and dear friends who will cherish her memory.
On Friday, July 10, 2026, after a lifetime of loving and faithfully serving her Lord, Thelma was welcomed home into the arms of Jesus. Her family finds comfort in imagining the words she lived her life to hear:
“Well done, my child. Welcome home.”
