Mr. Walter Matthew Crotty Jr., 77, of Falmouth, MA passed away in Marietta, GA on August 16, 2018 surrounded by family. Walter was born on July 7, 1941 in Medford, MA to the late Walter M. Crotty Sr. and Margaret Dillon Crotty. He was raised in Winchester, MA and graduated from Winchester High School. Walter earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and his master’s in Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
While there he was a member of ROTC. After college, Walter joined the United States Army as a Tac Officer and was soon promoted to Captain in the Armor Brigade Intelligence Section, training Officer Candidates, in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Walter worked for Owens Corning Fiberglass, where he rose through the ranks to become a regional manager. He was also a regional manager for Firestone Building Products. Later in his career, Walter taught and was the Athletic director at St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School in Hyannis, MA for 10 years. Walter was an active member of the Falmouth community. He served on the Board of Education and was a member of the Education and Recreation Committee; volunteered with Big Brothers and the Boys and Girls Club; coached baseball and hockey and umpired for many years.
Above everything else, Walter was very proud of his children and adored his grandchildren. Walter leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Peg Schoenecker Crotty; daughter, Kathryn Crotty Sywy (Stephen); son, Michael Crotty (Kayla); grandchildren, Tyler Sywy, Dean Sywy and Sequoia Crotty; brothers, Edmund Crotty, Paul Crotty (Kathy) and Robert Crotty (Wanda); and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday August 22nd at 11:00 AM at The Catholic Church of St Ann, Marietta, GA. Interment at Massachusetts National Cemetery with Military Honors will be at a later date following a Memorial Mass at St Patrick Catholic Church in Falmouth, MA.
