Will was born April 8, 1952 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia to parents James Virgil Cavender, Sr. and Martha Wilson Cavender. Will was preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister Francis Burchfield, brother, Jim Cavender and father-in-law, Robert Brown. Will is survived by his loving wife Elaine, son, Chris Tuck, daughter, Lindsay Holloway (Jonathan), sister, Charlotte Woodall, sister, Jan Cavender Rice, mother-in-law Emiline Brown, sister-in-law Vivian Vance (Bob), sister-in-law Sylvia Short (Dave), Grandchildren, Gavin Tuck, Caden Tuck, Eli Holloway, Emiline Holloway, and Hunter Holloway. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
After graduating from Peachtree High School in 1971, Will joined the US Army. He served for two years as an Aircraft Armament Subsystem Mechanic and maintained an expert marksman rating before being honorably discharged in 1973.
Will met his wife of 37 years, Elaine Brown and they lived in the Marietta and Woodstock area for many years. Professionally, Will worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad for 38 years, 9 months, 22 days, 5 hours, 38 minutes and 25 seconds (and that’s exactly how Will described his tenure at NSR). He was a hardworking man and also operated a successful flooring business up until his retirement in 2014.
Will loved sailing, spending time with family, riding his Big Bird neon yellow Phoenix Titan motorcycle, and collecting and shooting guns. He was a longtime member of the Pickens County gun club, where he frequently practiced his expert marksmanship with friends and family. After retirement, Will enjoyed sitting on the front porch of his home in Woodstock, watching the train roll by, and talking to everyone that passed.
Will’s family and friends will miss his witty, funny and sometimes inappropriate jokes, his sense of humor, and authentic spirit. He was one of a kind with a personality that was truly unique. He never met a stranger and dearly loved those close to him even when he couldn’t recall their name.
A memorial service for Will will be held Friday, March 25, 2022 at 9:30 AM at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr., Canton, GA 30114.
Following the service, a reception for friends and family will be held at 11:00 AM at Freight Kitchen & Tap in Downtown Woodstock.
