William Larry Mathews, Sr. was born September 21, 1940 in Aiken County, SC and passed away September 8, 2020 in Woodstock, GA. “Larry”, as he was known by his family and friends grew up in Thomaston, GA, graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1958. He then joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country in Hawaii for 4 years. His lifelong career was in the trucking industry and he worked for Yellow Freight Systems until his retirement in 2007. Larry was known for his dry, but funny sense of humor, kind nature, loving heart, unending patience, and was a true Patriot to his fellow American. He loved to spend time with family and friends but especially his beloved golden retrievers. His hobbies included golfing, fishing, dog training, hunting and gardening.
Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Nell Fowler Mathews, father, William Alvin Mathews, sisters, Helen Nasworthy, Joan Mathews and Mary Ann Musser. He is survived by his wife, Lynda Vinson-Mathews, son, William “Bill” Mathews and wife, Lisa Mathews of Peachtree City, GA, step-daughter, Dr. Monica Parker and husband Dr. Stephen Parker of Summerville, SC, grand-daughter, Melissa Mathews Evans and husband Justin Evans of Glencoe, AL, step- grandchildren, Reid and Anna Parker of Summerville, SC and sisters, Cathy Allison of Buford, GA, Ruth Hope and husband, Ron Hope of Covington, GA and Lynn Maddox and husband, James Maddox of Thomaston, GA. , and by many nephews and nieces.
A Celebration of Life for William Larry Mathews, Sr. will be held Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at 12:00 pm at the Woodstock Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a contribution be made to Larry’s church, Heritage Presbyterian Church, 5323 Bells Ferry Rd., Acworth, GA 30102 or to help the animals at Cherokee Humane Society 1015 Univeter Rd., Canton, GA 30115.
