Winifred was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was centered around her family, faith, and community. She was a steadfast and supportive partner to her husband, Thomas L. Shirey Sr., throughout his career, from his time at Lockheed to his work with the FAA. Her unwavering encouragement and dedication were a cornerstone of their life together.
A woman of deep faith, Winifred was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Decatur, where she generously gave her time in many ways. She served as editor of the church’s monthly newsletter, The Missile, worked part-time as a church secretary, and volunteered her time supporting the choir, booster clubs, and track activities. Her commitment to her church and community reflected her servant’s heart and enduring kindness.
Winifred was also passionate about her family’s activities, dedicating countless hours to supporting her children’s interests throughout their school years. She was a familiar and enthusiastic presence in booster clubs and school events, always cheering on those she loved.
In her personal time, Winifred enjoyed gardening, sewing, working crossword puzzles, cooking cherished family recipes passed down through generations, following NASCAR, and cheering on her beloved Atlanta Braves. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures and in creating lasting memories with her family.
She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas L. Shirey Sr. of Canton, Georgia; her daughter, Denice (Gary) Mandigo of Woodstock, Georgia; her son, Thomas L. (Kathryn) Shirey Jr. of Shelbyville, Kentucky; and her three grandsons, Michael Paul (Dalia) Smith, William Albert Shirey, and Thomas L. Shirey III.
