Donald Andrew Davies, 89 years old, of Worthington, Ohio passed away painlessly and peacefully in his home surrounded by his closest family. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who had the opportunity to know him.
If Don walked through the door and you were on the other side, you would be greeted with the warmest and most friendly smile. He made everyone he encountered feel at ease and truly seen. His infectious belly chuckle filled the space around him with absolute joy and love. He was smart, funny, philanthropic, devout, ethical, and his kindness will stay with us forever.
Don Davies was born to Mary Paton and Clyde Griffth Davies in Ashland, KY on January 3, 1937. Don spent his active childhood in Middletown, Ohio, playing sports, getting good grades, caring for his parents, and getting into mischief with his friends. He graduated from Dartmouth College as an Economics major and continued his education at The Ohio State University, where he received his Juris Doctorate. Before starting his career, he served in the Army Reserves. Knepper, White, Richards & Miller, who later merged with Arter & Hadden, was the first firm for whom he worked, where he practiced law guided by his innate principles and strong ethics. He led the Columbus office as Managing Partner for years while also dutifully serving as lead counsel for Mount Carmel Health System among others, leaving a legacy always guided by the principle of serving others first. He retired at the young age of 80 from Bailey Cavaliere. Don was a highly respected professional, man, and lawyer.
He married Jane Walker on June 25, 1966 and together they had four children: Pete, Jeff, Beth and Jenny. Don left work at the office which permitted him to be a dedicated father deeply involved in his children’s lives and activities - coaching baseball, Cub Scouts, Indian Princesses, teaching the proper golf grip, playing catch in the backyard, and cheering them on from the stands. He was the man behind the camera who captured footage of birthdays, games, and family gatherings.
When he was not at work or spending time with his family, Don enjoyed life to the fullest. He built so many long-lasting, meaningful relationships with friends, especially with so many from his old stomping grounds in Middletown. He was also frequently found at Worthington Hills Country Club where he served on the board for years and as President for a term. He was an avid athlete who excelled at paddle tennis and golf. In the winters, he traveled far with friends and family on ski trips, “doing the bumps” well into his golden years. It was during these golden years that he and Janey traveled the world, taking cruises to Southeast Asia, the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, Alaska, and Africa. He gave back to the community, acting as board member and chairperson for the American Cancer Society of Franklin County and board member of the Mt. Carmel Health System Foundation. He was a devoted member of the Catholic church, and his faith was as strong as his zest for life.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Janey; his children and spouses: Pete (Lisa), Jeff (Karen), Beth and Jenny. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Connor, Nicholas, Grant, Caroline, Will, Addie Brutsch and Jack Brutsch. Richard Davies, his brother, is the last standing Davies of his generation. Don was a warm patriarchal figure to his nieces and nephews and their partners, including Julie and Ron, Steve and Rob, Lynn and Jim, Martha, Polly and Pat. He was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Mary, and his two sisters Joan and Barbara, and niece Betsy.
Don’s humor, steadiness, and kindness brightened every room he ever entered. He will be missed by many but may the warm memories he gave us fill our times of grief.
