Don was born on May 4,1931, in Galloway, Ohio. He graduated from Grove City High School and proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. After serving his country, he married the love of his life, Georgia Imogene Crothers “Jean”. They would have celebrated 72 years of marriage on November 7.
Don's career in commercial transportation began at Cussins and Fearn, and he went on to become the first driver hired in Columbus for United Parcel Service (UPS). He rose through the ranks at UPS to manage Columbus operations and later trained semi-drivers in Chicago. Don’s professional journey also included time at Roadway Express and as Eastern Operations Manager for Merchants Home Delivery. Don’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to open several businesses, including Sell it Again store and an auto parts store, culminating in his role as Owner and President of Time Savers Courier Service, Inc.
Don had a lifelong love of John Deere tractors and anything mechanical. His yard was filled with tractors (all in different states of repair), and his garage was a haven of tools and tinkering. He was always ready to lend a hand, whether fixing a neighbor’s mower, supplying a tractor, mowing a yard or picking up leaves.
Don had many friends throughout the years. He loved telling stories, visiting with neighbors and friends, repairing John Deere tractors and having coffee with friends at Der Dutchman. He enjoyed living in the Worthington community and was “Neighbor of the Year” in 2016. Don was a yearly fixture at the Worthington Memorial Day parade in his U.S. Army uniform and riding his John Deere. Don remained active and resided at his home with his wife, Jean, until his passing.
Don loved spending time with his family and was adored by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was affectionately known as “Papaw”.
Don is survived by his wife, Jean; 4 children, Dave Hyland (Cathie), Dan (Lisa) Hyland, Brenda (Mike) Cross, Sandy (Tom) Fisher; grandchildren, Justin Fisher, Ian (Brittany) Fisher, Sara (Charlie) Burggraf, Bennett (Lauren) Cross, Hayley (Collin) Lisi, Katherine (Andrew) Keating, Grant Cross, David “Alex” (Maggie) Hyland, Charlotte Hyland, Lauren (Jeff) Tillerson; great-grandchildren, Hendrix and Joplin Fisher, Luca and Liam Lisi, Maci and Quinn Burggraf, Elijah Tillerson and Evelyn Cross; brother, Franklin Hyland; and sister-in-law, Marge Hyland.
