Donald J. Hulslander, Jr.

July 28, 1943 – September 9, 2026

Donald John Hulslander Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, achievement, and cherished memories.

Don was born on July 28, 1943, in Newport, Rhode Island, to Donald John Hulslander Sr. and Julia Hulslander. He later made Ohio his home and was a proud graduate of North High School in Columbus. He continued his education at The Ohio State University, was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and Army ROTC where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army, earning his bachelor’s degree, and later received his master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

He proudly served his country for 28 years as a career Field Artillery Officer, completing two combat tours in Vietnam (1967–1968 and 1971), and was awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal.

While in the Army Reserves, Don enjoyed a successful career with Unisys Corporation. His dedication and service to the Ohio State Army ROTC program was recognized in 2017 as he was honored with induction into the Army ROTC Hall of Fame, an achievement of which he was very proud.

He was a devoted member of the Ohio State Alumni Association and President of the Army ROTC Alumni Association. A lifelong Buckeye at heart, Don loved Ohio State football and the Ohio State Marching Band. He was also an avid New York Yankees fan.

Above all, Don will be known for the love and adoration he had for his beloved wife, Susan “Susie.” Their life together was filled with love, companionship, travel, family, and countless cherished memories. He treasured traveling with Susie and spending time with his grandchildren, especially celebrating their accomplishments and milestones. For many years, some of his happiest memories were made during summer camp with family at Camp Hemlock and with the entire Bartz family. These traditions created countless memories that will continue to be treasured for generations.

Don was an avid runner during his high school years and continued to enjoy running later in life, including many miles shared with his son, Bill. Running was another way he demonstrated his energy, determination, and love of life.

Don is survived by his sons, John (Kimberly) and William; his daughter, Laura (Rear Admiral Matthew Pottenburgh); and his beloved grandchildren, Thomas, Tyler, Owen, Olivia, and Donald. He is also survived by James Bartz, Richard and Annette Bartz, many adored nieces and nephews, and many cherished lifelong friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Julia; his beloved wife, Susan “Susie”; his sister-in-law, Sally Bartz; and his brother-in-law, William Bartz.

Don will be remembered for his warmth, devotion to family, deep love for Susie, service to country, pride in his accomplishments, love of Ohio State, enthusiasm for sports, adventurous spirit, and the joy he found in the people he loved. His family and friends will carry his memory in their hearts and be grateful for the many years, traditions, and special moments they shared with him.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of life will be held at Schoedinger Funeral Home - Worthington (6699 N. High Street Worthington, Ohio 43085) on Sunday, September 27 at 10:30 AM with a reception to follow.
