George was born on April 21, 1934, in Orange, New Jersey, the eldest of two children of Frank C. and Marjorie A. Montag. He graduated from Montclair High School, where he played center on the football team, and went on to attend the University of Maine. During college, he was an active member of the Omega Mu chapter of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
In 1961, George married Nancy Wolfe, beginning a loving partnership that would last nearly 62 years.
George built a long and successful career in sales with Brodart and Winnebago Software, specializing in educational materials and automation systems for school and public libraries.
A committed community member, George was an active participant in his local Optimist Club, where he served in several leadership roles. He was also a dedicated member of The Shipwrights of Ohio, a group devoted to the art of scale model shipbuilding. Over the years, he crafted several model boats, taking great pride in their detail and historical accuracy.
George had a lifelong love of sailing and spent many weekends racing his Comet sailboat at the Leatherlips Yacht Club or enjoying time on the water with his family at their cherished lake home in Maine. He was also a classic car enthusiast, drawn to both their craftsmanship and performance.
As proud Buckeye fans, George and Nancy hosted regular football tailgates that became legendary. For 50 years, beginning in 1971, George served as an usher at The Ohio State University football games, a role he began through his involvement in scouting. As a "Red Coat" usher, his half-century of dedication to the Buckeye spirit was honored with a ceremony and commemorative plaque at Ohio Stadium, affectionately known as “The Shoe.”
Above all, George was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He had a deep love for his children's athletic pursuits, whether coaching their teams, cheering from the sidelines, or helping them hone their skills on the court, on the rink, or in the backyard.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Wolfe Montag. He is survived by his sister, Cary Montag Fleming; his children, Eric (Susan) Montag, Melissa Montag, Karen (Nick) Beekman, and Eddie Hollins; and his grandchildren, Wesley (Megan), Harrison (Tess), and Laurel Montag, as well as Spencer and Arlie Beekman. He is also remembered fondly by numerous extended family members and close friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Memorial Gables Nursing Home and Bella Care Hospice for their compassionate care.
