

James “Jim” Richard Papenbrock, lovingly known as “Pappy”, passed away peacefully at home on July 14, 2026, after a brief and courageous battle related to occupational cancer. He was surrounded by his loving wife and daughters at the time of his passing.
He was born on December 8, 1960, in Columbus, Ohio, and is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Helen (Melchiorre) Papenbrock; sisters, Marian Papenbrock and Kathy Mounts; and good friend, Roy McClure.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Darlene (Allen) Papenbrock; daughters, Erica Papenbrock and Ashley Papenbrock; sister, Susan (James) Throckmorton; niece Melissa (Josh) Clark; nephews, James Throckmorton and Kevin Mounts; as well as many dear friends, extended family members, former firefighters, and loved ones whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Jim dedicated more than 30 years of service where he began his career at the Sharon Township Fire Department in 1990. Jim retired from the Worthington Division of Fire (IAFF Local 3498) in 2013. Before joining Sharon Township, he served as a paramedic and firefighter with Clinton Township and Perry Township Fire Departments.
Jim was known for his compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to helping others in their time of greatest need. He had a true passion for teaching and took great pride in sharing his knowledge and experience. He was also an instructor for BLS/ACLS/PALS at Columbus State Community College for many years teaching nursing and EMS students. His service left a lasting impact on the community and on the many lives he touched.
Above all else, Jim cherished his family. Together, Jim and Darlene built a life centered on love, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. He was a proud and devoted father to his daughters, Erica and Ashley, and found great joy in the time spent with family and friends. Jim also had a special love for his beloved dogs, who brought him countless moments of companionship and happiness over the years.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Schoedinger Worthington. Following the visitation, family and friends are invited to share brief memories and remarks in honor of Jim’s life and legacy (6699 North High Street, Worthington, Ohio 43085).
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (20 E. Dominion Blvd., Columbus, Ohio). Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery with full firefighter honors (9571 North High Street, State Route 23 North, Lewis Center, Ohio).

Jim’s legacy of service, loyalty, kindness, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
