

Born in Columbus on March 5, 1934, to John A. and Elizabeth Leake Southworth, Jean was raised in Bexley, Ohio, where she graduated from Bexley High School. She went on to earn her nursing degree from The Ohio State University College of Nursing. Her commitment to service led her to join the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, where she spent 20 years caring for others and advancing through the ranks to Lieutenant Commander. Jean's service during the Vietnam War was marked by her role in educating Navy Hospital Corpsmen, and she furthered her own education by earning a Master's Degree in Education.
After retiring from the Navy, Jean returned to Columbus, where she continued her nursing career in local hospitals and long-term care facilities, providing compassionate care to countless patients. She was a steadfast member of Broad Street Presbyterian Church and the Ohio Nurses Association. Jean's advocacy for social justice, her unwavering commitment to nursing, and her voice for patient rights made her a champion for those in need.
Jean's life was a testament to curiosity and creativity. She was a lifelong learner, eager to expand her horizons through travel, education, and personal growth. Jean also pursued her artistic passions, studying at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Her creative spirit and love for the arts were an integral part of her life and will continue to inspire those who knew her.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Southworth; her sister, Jane
Southworth-Thomas; and her brother, John T. Southworth. She is survived by nieces Cheri Jenkins (Jack), Amy Thomas, and Cathy Rebel, as well as great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Schoedinger Funeral – Midtown, 229 E. State Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio.
Jean’s legacy of care, advocacy, and boundless curiosity will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
