She brought a kind, thoughtful, compassionate, passionate, sympathetic, and empathetic face to the world, brightening it by her presence. We remember her exuberance, humor, and radiant beauty. Nevertheless, she maintained a fierce independence…sometimes to the dismay, if not sheer terror, of friends and family.
As a young child she wrote a story, “Sneaky Pete goes to the Big Apple,” followed by “Sneaky Pete and His Sister Sally go to the Big Apple.” At the time she thought she was literally writing about an apple, not about New York City. This foray into writing presaged her later career in journalism and publishing, one requiring considerably greater accuracy.
In November 1985 at age 12 at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s performance of “The Pied Piper Fantasy,” she played the flute in a children’s ensemble with the noted flutist James Galway. After three rehearsals and two evening concerts, it was the proudest and most often recounted highlight of her brilliant but short musical career.
When not engaged in other pursuits which delighted her, she had many crushes, usually overlapping, on Ricky Martin, George Michael, Bono, Harry Styles, arepas, hard candy, and smoothies.
In her spare time, she enjoyed refinishing furniture, even having a small storefront in Westerville for some time. Jennifer also engaged in the arts of cooking and photography, hosting a social media page for her many delicious recipes and beautiful plating techniques. She enjoyed making arepas and obtaining hallacas for holiday meals. Craft products made alongside her friend Alma sometimes ended up on Etsy. She combined her craft expertise with interior design, happily furnishing her home with artistic, graphical elements.
She shared many favorite memories with us. In her youth in Caracas, Venezuela, these included meeting the boy band Menudo (think Ricky Martin) at the Hotel Tamanaco pool (a favorite place) while clad in her Cookie Monster bathing suit; the International School Campo Alegre; bats in the house; obstacles faced by her mother at the harbor trying to obtain a bike shipped from the US; a security guard dropping an automatic weapon into the home’s water tank (and having to go in and retrieve it); and time with friends at the Tarzilandia Restaurant.
In Southern California she recalled classmate Elizabeth Shue (from Karate Kid) in Bellarmine Jefferson High School in Burbank; working at Universal Studios Hollywood, where she sold a beer to Ronald Reagan; and a frozen turkey delivered as part of a full meal from a grocery store on Thanksgiving Day which she and her gathered dinner guests could not fit into the microwave.
She maintained an active interest in the political situation in Venezuela. As a child she was raised alongside the former political party leader Leopoldo Lopez (see Tarzilandia Restaurant above) and stayed in communication with him as an adult. She connected locally with Venezuelans and others with Hispanic heritage in volunteer work and social situations.
Jennifer traveled to many places, including Germany, Venezuela, Texas, Spain, Mallorca, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, St. Thomas, Canada, Niagara Falls and the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York, Chicago, Louisville, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Dollar General, Target, Kroger, CVS and the smoothie shop.
Jenn, or Jenny, as she was known, started school in Caracas, Venezuela at Campo Alegre. In Baltimore County, Maryland she attended Woodbridge Elementary School, high school at Maryvale Preparatory School and Mount De Sales Academy. In Burbank, California she graduated from Bellarmine-Jefferson High School in 1991. She completed an Associate Arts degree in Journalism at Glendale Community College, summa cum laude, and her bachelor’s degree in Journalism at California State Northridge, magna cum laude. She and later completed a second bachelor’s degree, this time in Spanish Linguistics, summa cum laude at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in 2005.
Embracing family heritage from Venezuela and living there for some years when younger, she was a bilingual, accent-free native speaker of both Spanish and English. She applied her journalistic and linguistics skills professionally, with more than 25 years of experience in educational publishing, banking communications, project management, and team leadership. She even translated film scripts for Disney, like “CARS” for Spanish markets. She also qualified as a medical interpreter for Spanish. In her free time, she volunteered to help non-English speakers navigate the language as well as the English language paper trail required in their daily lives.
She worked at The McGraw-Hill Companies for most of the period from 1997 to 2012. She joined Glencoe McGraw-Hill in Woodland Hills, CA and transferred with their foreign language textbook division to Columbus, OH in 2001. As a world languages editor she scheduled, tracked, managed and contributed to design and artwork for four-color electronic textbooks for high school French and Spanish programs, among other publications. She edited manuscripts, translated text from Spanish to English, and collaborated with website designers. Later as a Health Editor for K-12 educational Health programs, she was a lead editor and translator for high school programs Glencoe Health and Glencoe Health La Salud. She ensured products properly aligned to state standards and current, relevant health topics and news.
At JP Morgan Chase, Columbus, OH from 2013 to 2018 she was an Assistant VP and Spanish linguist. She performed and managed translations in both languages meeting legal standards for a wide range of banking services and individual communications. In addition to translation management, she helped drive the customer experience for Spanish-speaking customers and leveraged her expertise of the nuances of Spanish in twenty different countries.
She performed full-time editorial work GTS Publishing Services in Los Angeles; and in Ohio with Eisemann Communications in Dublin, and Carson Dellosa Education in Columbus.
Her range of capabilities is best portrayed by her freelance work for Disney Worldwide Publishing; Holt, Rinehart and Winston; Vista Higher Learning; Houghton Mifflin; Kaeden Publishing; Teacher Created Materials; IMP Events; Out-of-the-Box Corporation; Alpo; Los Angeles Children's Hospital; and McCormick.
Having passed certification in, and with an extensive understanding of, medical terminology in English and Spanish, she worked in Columbus for Access 2 Interpreters from 2008 to 2009, and US Together Interpreting Services starting in 2018. She conducted face-to-face interpretations between a health professional provider and Spanish-speaking clients, typically family members of hospital or medical office patients. These included consecutive, simultaneous, and liaison/escort translations. Clients of this service included: The State of Ohio, The Ohio State Hospitals, Franklin County Children Services, Franklin County Senior Services, Franklin County Welfare (SNAP), Columbus City Schools, Ohio Health, Ortho Neuro, Mount Carmel Health System, and Nationwide Children's Hospital. She is also the voice of the Spanish language 911 emergency prompt recording for the City Of Columbus.
She is survived by her partner Christopher Sharp, father Lt. Col. USA (Ret.) William Doyle, Jr. of Burke, VA, sister Megan Doyle of Richmond, VA, stepfather Larry Marcey of Las Vegas, NV, aunts Dorothy Harvey, of Melbourne, FL, Margaret Robinson (James) of Catonsville, MD, and Catherine Gaddy of Cambridge, MD; uncles Peter Doyle (Janet Doyle) of Easton, MD, Michael Doyle (Bernard Branson, M.D.) of Atlanta, GA, and Stephen Doyle (Gael Towey) of East Hampton, NY; and longtime close confidant Maryanne Dantonio and her husband Vinny of Chandler, AZ. She has numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Her mother, Florence Webb Doyle, stepmother Sheila Hendriks Doyle, brother Brian Doyle, and her Webb and Doyle family grandparents predeceased her.
Along with her pet cat Vader, her pet dogs Athena and Beau were enormously important to her. Her first dog, an Akita later named Athena, allegedly appeared to her in a park in LA, and was summarily adopted. Athena later lost a front leg after being hit by a car. Athena moved with her from LA to Columbus in 2001 and survived as her sidekick for many years.
Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside Doyle was the love of her life, a rescue dog that was part Border Collie, and a larger part stolen pizza (his favorite food to steal). Beau was a sass-basket from Day One, biting and chewing his way through legs, arms, couches, cash and car keys. He would mellow with age and became Jenn and Chris’ constant adventure companion. Beau was often recognized from various social media posts, occasionally from local businesses. People always knew who he was, but never who his owners were. He passed away in August, while Jennifer was in the hospital.
Her Celebration of Life will take place at the Schoedinger Worthington Funeral Home, 6699 N. High Street, Worthington, OH 43085 on February 23, 2025 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Coffee, tea, and cookies…and candy in her honor… will be offered.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to Faith Mission, which provides shelter and services to those experiencing homelessness and supports at-risk women and children. The facility is at 245 N Grant Ave, Columbus, OH 43215, Phone: (614) 224-6617.
