Mary Sue Harman

Born July 20, 1936, in Princeton, W.V., Sue carried throughout her life the warmth and resilience of her small-town upbringing. With her beloved husband, Walter D. “Walt” Harman, she traveled the world as an Army wife and raised three children: Douglas Harman (Pam) of Conway, S.C., Daniel Harman (Anne) of Huntington, N.Y., and Melissa Elder (Dan) of Columbus, Ohio.

Sue was the focal point of her family. She made holiday meal after holiday meal that brought everyone together, watched over her grandchildren with tenderness and steadiness, and gave generously of herself in large and small ways. Sue was a cherished grandmother to Christopher, Stephanie, Isabelle, Charlotte, Lauren, Ian and Aubrey; and great-grandmother to Hermi. She is survived by a brother, John Caldwell, of Wytheville, Va., and a sister, Herma Brown of Greensboro, N.C.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband in 2009; also by her brother Jerry Kyle Caldwell and sisters Carolyn Farley and Jane Noble of Princeton, W.V.

She was born to the late Herman Kyle Caldwell and Anna Sue Chambers Caldwell. Sue attended Princeton High School and Concord College. Sue married the love of her life in 1957. Moving with the Army, she and Walt lived in Verona, Italy, the Philippines and many U.S. locations before settling in Ohio.

Sue was an avid tennis player, loved the theater and ballet, and was a member of the Worthington Chorus. She joined the Worthington Women’s Club in 1993, where she made lifelong friends. Sue was a past president (2004-05) of the club, which promotes friendship and opportunities for community service, and served as chair of many committees, including Global Cuisine, Lunching Ladies, Round Robin Bridge and Mah Jongg. Sue was instrumental in compiling the club’s “Bicentennial Cookbook” in 2003.

Those who loved Sue will remember her for her hospitality, love of family and quick laugh. She made a welcoming home, volunteered, and loved reading, travel and trying new recipes. Her presence in the family was steady and generous, and her memory will remain in the stories, traditions and affections she leaves behind.

The family invites all who knew and loved Sue to join in honoring her life and impact of she made on everyone around her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Schoedinger Worthington, 6699 N High Street, Worthington, OH 43085, US, on July 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
