March 4, 1920- March 6, 2022
Mary Gremer Wohleber, born March 4, 1920, in Rochester, PA., died peacefully of natural causes just two days after her 102nd birthday, at Trillium Crossing Brookdale Senior Living Center in Columbus, Ohio. Mary is survived by her children Richard J. Wohleber III, Julie (Wohleber) Gloeckner, Robert M. Wohleber, Bruce T. Wohleber, and Don S. Wohleber. She was also a loving "Nana" to 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Richard J. Wohleber, Jr. as well as her sisters and brothers.
Mary grew up as one of five children in a very close-knit family, and she kept in touch with her many Gremer relations all her life. Her mother died when she was 16. Shortly after she finished high school, the US entered WWII. Mary took a job at Curtis Wright Air Equipment, a company which produced airplane parts for the war effort. There she met the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Wohleber, and they were married in 1946. Richard later went to work at his family's oil distribution business while Mary raised their five children. In 1951 they moved to Upper St. Clair, PA, where they lived for 35 years. Mary was active at St. Thomas More Church and School and involved in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brookside Bridge Club, bowling league, and as an avid golfer she won various prizes at St. Clair Country Club. She made many lifelong friends in Pittsburgh. Mary was also a great fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates, and attended Steeler games, terrible towel in hand, well into her late 90's. The couple had purchased a home on Indian Lake near Somerset, PA in 1970, and even after Dick passed away in 2000, Mary spent many summers at the lake, making friends and wonderful family memories. The lake was a favorite destination for all the grandchildren, and even some of the great-grandchildren were able to spend time there with their Nana.
After her children were raised, Mary had a successful career in real estate for ten years and was awarded a prize as a million-dollar agent. She and Dick moved to Bower Hill Apartments, Mt. Lebanon, PA, in 1986, and made many friends there. She also attended St. John Capistran R.C. Church.
Mary liked to travel and made trips to Europe with her grandchildren, but also visited each of her children's families often, helping with new babies and/or active teenagers. In 2018, at the age of 98, she moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she lived her final chapter at Trillium, acting as an ambassador for the facility when she was not playing Bridge, Mahjong, exercising, or visiting with her many new friends.
To know Mary was to be a friend to Mary. She will be dearly missed by all her family as well as all her old and new friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 16 at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 6899 Smoky Row Rd., Columbus, OH, 43235. The family will greet friends at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM, followed directly by a Mass. Interment will be at Christ Our Redeemer Catholic Cemetery in Northside, Pittsburgh, PA.
