Randall Gene James, 74, of Powell, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025. Born on March 11, 1951, to Gene Carl and Margaret Marie James, Randy lived a full and meaningful life marked by humor, craftsmanship, and devotion to family.
A graduate of Findlay College, Randy built a remarkable 50-year career as an accountant, working with integrity, precision, and dedication. Beyond his professional life, he found joy and expression in his many passions. He was an accomplished woodcarver whose detailed creations reflected both patience and artistry, and an avid photographer with an eye for life’s quiet and beautiful moments.
Randy served as Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 560 in Westerville throughout both of his sons’ involvement in Scouting, taking great pride in supporting their growth and adventures. He also loved cheering on the Columbus Blue Jackets and traveling the world, always curious and eager to explore new places.
Randy was known for his quick wit, independent spirit, and self-proclaimed status as a proud curmudgeon — qualities that endeared him to many and kept those around him smiling.
He is survived by his father, Gene James; his aunt, Sherry Edwards; his former spouse and dear friend, Annette Hoelzer; his sons, Matthew Gene James (Hyunjoo Im) and Brian Geoffrey James (Samantha James); his siblings, Kerry James, Vicki Phillips, and Keith James; and his cherished grandchildren, Henry and Jesse James. He is also remembered for the deep affection he had for his late dogs — Jake, Aonghas, and Brodie — loyal companions who brought him much joy through the years.
Randy will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who will remember his sharp mind, warm heart, and creative soul.
