Richard (Dick) Mayhew

The Ohio State University. The youngest of seven children of James Irvin Mayhew and Isabel Lilian Mayhew, Dick is survived by his loving wife, Judy (Hawthorne) Mayhew, his daughter Heidi (Hellstrom), son in law, Alex Hellstrom, two grandchildren, Abby and Ethan Hellstrom, and many members of his extended family. He graduated in 1953 from West High School, Columbus.

After a three year stint at Ohio State University, he eventually landed at the Department of Defense, Logistics, DSAC in Whitehall, Ohio where he worked for thirty-three years. He served as a computer specialist, an instructor, a supervisor, and a joyful, hardworking co-worker. While not at work he enjoyed golfing, bowling, photography, old movies, and ice cream—especially the ice cream tour trips he took with his daughter in the last few months of his life. But most of all, he loved his family: doting on his wife, spoiling his daughter and smothering his grandchildren with love and happiness once he became a proud Papa.

Dick was a member of Worthington United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School, bible school and numerous bible study classes. He sang in the choir, helped the audio team, served as a Stephan Minister, photographed many church events, and was a constant source of love, support and comfort for anyone whose path he crossed, often becoming, just by his helpful, giving spirit, a pastor to the pastors.

It has been said that anyone who knew Dick was a better person for it. He offered himself wholeheartedly to anyone he met, whether a family member, a waitress at a local diner, a smiling child in their mother’s arms, or his neighbor in need of a friend. He lived out his faith with the true heart of a servant, and will be missed beyond measure.

Funeral services will be held Saturday October 29, 2022 at Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 High St, Worthington, Ohio 43085. Visitation hours are from 12 pm – 2, and the service begins at 2. Donations in his honor can be made to Worthington United Methodist Church.
