

Robert Clarence Gertler, born June 16, 1939, in Columbus, Ohio, was promoted to glory on January 19, 2025, at the Kobacker House, Columbus, Ohio. Preceded in death by parents Clarence E. Gertler and Evelyn M. (Quick) Gertler. Bob was married to Patsy Barney Gertler on November 29, 1975.
Bob graduated from Olentangy High School in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army, Ft. Bliss, Texas, 1961-1964. He joined Battelle Memorial Institute in 1965, as a research technician, until retirement in 2013. He received many honors and awards for his excellence in service.
He was a faithful member and servant of Grace Polaris Church, Westerville, where he served as Deacon and coordinator of the church Watch Team. He loved working on many projects at the church including the Living Christmas Tree programs, property security gates, and repairing anything. People will deeply miss his smile, generosity, and willingness to serve others.
He was an Honor Flight Guardian to Washington DC to visit the World War II and Korean War memorials on April 26, 2014.
He served his community as a Columbus Police Reserve Recruiting Officer for 20 years retiring in 2008. He was presented the Chief’s Award in recognition of outstanding service and dedication to the citizens of Columbus in 1996.
He is survived by wife Patsy Barney Gertler, son Scott Gertler (Kathy) Worthington, daughter Susan Hatfield, Marengo; grandchildren Zoe, Ava, and Phin Gertler, and Morgan (Alexis) Hatfield and Ethan (Rachel) Hatfield; brother Ronald Gertler; (Centerburg) sister Nancy Thompson (Delaware); great grandchildren Bexley, Knox, and Aubryn Hatfield. Several cousins, nieces and nephews and extended family.
In every step of this journey, his family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and affection. Our gratitude is immeasurable to friends, family, and staff of the Kobacker House. He was a beloved friend to many and will be deeply missed.
