Susan Ellen Arnold was born at Marion General Hospital November 22, 1951 to Ruth (Guthery) Arnold and James Arnold. She had two older brothers, Lowell “Punk” Arnold and Jim Arnold. While growing up in Marion, Ohio, Susan made many lifelong friends including Jack Hancock, Mark Brashares and Steve Harper. At a young age Susan took great joy in horseback riding and helping her mother Ruth with her antique shop. She graduated from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois with plans to teach deaf children in Columbus, Ohio. She then began a relationship with a childhood friend, Mark Hobbins, whom she later married and had two children, Justin and Bret. Mark brought to the marriage two boys from his previous marriage, Brian and Nathan. After living a short time on the east side of Columbus they moved to Gahanna. Susan, Mark and the four boys celebrated many beautiful holidays on their house on Hartney Drive before the couple split years later. Tragedy struck the family in the summer of 1999 when Justin passed away in a tragic car accident. Susan was then cared for by her then fiance, Bob House. Shortly after her retirement from the Ohio School for the Deaf, after a wonderful career of 37 years, she rediscovered her deep admiration for antiques. She opened her antique shop in Alexandria, Ohio called “Alexandria Antiques” with her dear friend, Meredith.
Throughout her life, Susan had a grand adoration for her nieces, Sarah, Amy, and Katherine. She also found great joy while spending time with Sarah’s children, Aiden, Kellen, and Rowan as well as Amy’s son, Ian. Susan was overcome with joy when she found out that she was going to become a grandmother to Bret’s son, Liam in September of 2010, and was then again blessed with a granddaughter, Lily Ruthann in July of 2012. Liam and Lily were the brightest spots of her world.
To pass the time Susan loved to cook, garden and she loved to throw a good party. She also enjoyed shopping and sending Christmas and Birthday gifts to her friends and family.
Susan watched her last sunset from her window at the Danbury Nursing Home on June 23, 2025, and passed away peacefully sometime in the night. Susan was greatly adored by her closest friends and family, and she will be sorely missed.
Visiting hours and memorial service will be held at the Schoedinger Funeral Home in Worthington, Ohio, on Sunday, July 20, 2025. Visiting hours are from 10:00am to 1:00pm, with the memorial service beginning promptly at 1:00pm. There will be no graveside service as Susan will be cremated before finally being laid to rest beside her departed son, Justin, where they can rest together in peace and share many more sunsets.
