

William Eugene “Bill” Lude, 82, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025. Born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, he was the son of the late Carl and Margaret (Schurtz) Lude. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother George (Judith) Lude, and niece Kim Short.
A 1961 graduate of Martins Ferry High School and a 1966 graduate of the University of Dayton, Bill was a standout football player throughout both high school and college. After serving his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he earned his Master’s degree from Xavier University in 1971 and began a lifelong career in education. Bill was a dedicated Middle School Principal who believed deeply in the potential of every student and worked tirelessly to help them succeed.
Bill’s life was rooted in faith, service, and integrity. He was an active and much-loved member of Fellowship Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher, participated in fellowship activities, and offered help to anyone in need. He also volunteered regularly at the Lutheran Social Services Food Pantry, embodying his commitment to compassion and service.
Known for his humility, kindness, and unwavering moral compass, Bill was the kind of man who did the right thing even when it wasn’t the easy thing. He was a gifted storyteller, a dependable friend, and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished time with his family and enjoyed golfing with an ever-changing group of close friends over the years.
Bill is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 44 years, Pamela (Smith) Lude; his children, Carl William (Tina) Lude and Sarah (Matt) Burns; and his beloved grandsons, Robby and Jack. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis (John) McVey; nieces Rebekah (Chad) West, Brooke (Frank) Ferrel, Kris Lude; nephew Kirk Lude; and many dear friends and former students whose lives he touched over the years.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Schoedinger Worthington. A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, May 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Fellowship Lutheran Church, followed by burial at Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the PanCAN Foundation, Lutheran Social Services Food Pantry, or Fellowship Lutheran Church.
