He was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, son of P. Richard Schumann and Helen (Manning) Schumann on January, 22, 1942. He graduated from Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, MI and from Mount Union University in Alliance, Ohio.
Bill was actively involved in athletics from an early age. In high school, he played basketball and tennis. In college, he played soccer and tennis. After college, he graduated from University of Cincinnati College of Law becoming a licensed attorney in 1967. His career path was then temporarily interrupted by a military service commitment with the U.S. Army during our Vietnam Conflict. He received the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service. He always remained proud and grateful for his service to our country during those difficult times.
After his discharge he settled in Columbus where he joined the law firm of Teaford, Benaud, West and Brothers. After a few years, he initiated his own private law practice in the Westerville area which continued for over 40 years until his retirement in 2013. With the teachings of his parents, he believed that meaningful community service was also very important. He served as chief legal counsel for the Berkshire Township Trustees for several years (Delaware County) and while doing so, he authored the Berkshire Township Revised Zoning Code. After coaching several youth soccer and baseball teams in both Worthington and Westerville he moved onto the Board of Directors for the Worthington Youth Boosters Athletic Organization. In the early to mid-1990’s he was Chief Commissioner for travel and recreational soccer in the Worthington school district.
In later years he and his wife, Ginny joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in Westerville, Ohio. They both became actively involved in church activities. He served as a member of church council as well as on its Stewardship and Endowment committees. He and Ginny both loved their church.
On a personal note, he always remained fiercely loyal to his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio largely because of his long family heritage there. (“Y-town is my town”). Bill fancied himself as an avid successful fisherman, but in true reality he was just a “wannabe” fisherman. He truly loved his entire family (including the dogs). He rarely missed any sporting or school event involving his children and grandchildren. For certain, he could be extremely opinionated and argumentative, but no one who really knew him had any doubts that his views were sincere and genuine.
He is survived by lovely wife, Ginny, the true love of his life for many, many years. Also by his children Brooks of Worthington and Lisa (John) Kroeger of Powell; grandchildren Reed and Claire Kroeger; sister, Molly Larson of Norwalk, CT. He is also survived by his stepchildren Steve (Sharon) Jaster of Glen Ellyn, Chris (Mitch) Burke of West Jefferson, Tim (Kirsten) Jaster of Gahanna, and Ryan (Mandy) Jaster of Dublin. Grandchildren Stephanie, Lexi, Alyssa, Max, Erich, Emma, Nolan and Emmett. He is also survived by nieces Kate (Chip) Farnham of Chester Springs, PA, Anne (Rob) Brakeman of Monroe, CT and nephew Stephen (Jessica) Larson of San Francisco, CA.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023, from 10am until 11am, at St Paul Lutheran Church, 4686 East Walnut St., Westerville OH, 43081. A Memorial Service will follow at 11am.
