Adam was born June 20, 1927 in Trail City, SD to Joseph and Eva (Lacher) Fischer. He attended school up to the 8th grade when he had to quit to help on the family farm. Among his many chores he baked bread daily for the family. He moved with his parent and several siblings to Yakima in 1945, and soon after he was called up to serve in the US Army at the end of World War II. He received his basic training at Ft. Lewis, WA and served as a private prison guard and also as a driver for his Commander in and around Washington D.C Adam was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Yakima.
Adam met his future wife, Bernice Heilman on a blind date in Yakima and they were married August 28, 1952 at St. Paul's Cathedral. They were blessed with four children, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was a member of Carpenters Union 770 and commuted to work on the Grand Coulee Dam. He then worked as a carpenter for Louis Irwin Construction and Frenzel Construction. During this time he also built two homes for his family. Adam retired in 1989, but continued his trade by helping his sons build their homes.
He enjoyed camping, boating and traveling with Bernice in their RV, but foremost he loved spending time with his family. Adam loved babies and children were always drawn to him. In younger days he could dance the Polka and on rare occasions he could even be persuaded to yodel. Adam was a quiet man, but he didn’t need works to express his feelings. His warm embrace and gentle smile spoke volumes. He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. We are all better people for having known him.
Adam is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bernice, his children Mike (Trish), Denise McGuire, Steve (Roselle), and Gail (Ross) Anderson, all of Yakima, his grandchildren Marcy (Nathan) Jill, Jacob (Brooke, Patrick (Torry), Sarah “Elizabeth” (Chris), Brad, Cassie, Mindy, and Ryley, his great grandchildren Kyle, Gavin, Garet, Samantha, Elle and Brooklynn, his brothers Frank, Al and Mike, his sisters Carol Johnson and Barbara Irwin, and many loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Joe, John, Andy, tony, Cap, Leo and his sister Christine Zimmerman.
The family would like to thank Deb and all of the staff at Willow Springs for their loving care of Adam.
