

He was born the seventh of nine children to John and Elva Unruh in Greensburg, Kansas on June 11, 1917. Alvin married Ruth Hazen on August 7, 1939. Times were hard in Kansas, so two years later they moved to Yakima. The very next day, they had jobs picking fruit. He worked in orchards for a few years, then construction, working for Hans Skov. Eventually, he joined the Teamsters Union and worked throughout the Northwest, ending at Hanford.
He is survived by daughter Shirley Ann Murphy and son Donald Unruh and wife Lee all of Yakima; and a special niece, Leigh Ann Knutzen of Kennewick; five grandchildren, Richard Murphy, Heather (David) Hall of Yakima, Jolene (Michael) Goulart of Selah, Troy (Tammy) Unruh of New Castle, WA and Amber Henyan of Yakima; great grandchildren, Kodie and Nichole Murphy, Cascade Hall, Kelly and Lucas Goulart, Gage Unruh and Mia Henyan.
One great great granddaughter Mollee Nichole was born June 15, 2011 and returned to the angels on July 8, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, son-in-law, Richard M. Murphy and all his siblings including brother, Irvin who was his best friend and sister-in-law, Marie.
Alvin was dearly loved by his family and willed be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Hospital Hospice or charity of choice. Visitation will be held at the Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel on Friday, December 2, 2011 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel on Saturday, December 3, 20 11 at 11:00 a.m. Concluding services and burial will follow at West Hills Memorial Park.
