Born in Wapato, Washington on November 25, 1920 to Henry and Minnie (Carl) Beaudry, the Yakima area would always be home. She attended Parker schools, St. Joseph Academy in Yakima and graduated from Wapato High School in 1938. On September 12, 1942 she married Matthew “Ed” Leonard. Like so many, Mom kept the home fires burning while Dad served in the WWII European theater. After the war, they made their home in Yakima raising their four children and celebrating 46 years of marriage before Dad passed away in October, 1988.
Although Mom periodically worked outside the home including several years at Joseph’s Warehouse, her first and most important career was the care of her family and creating a warm and welcoming home. Mom’s hospitality, the meals and lively discussions enjoyed around their dining room table were well known and appreciated by family and friends.
Mom loved traveling, she toured extensively throughout western Europe with her children. Over the years, with family or friends, Mom visited most of the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. Her refrigerator magnet collection attests to each visit.
Mom and her family were founding members of Holy Family Parish. She was also an active member of the VFW Auxiliary 379 and the American Legion Auxiliary 162.
Mom’s was a life well lived. She leaves many good memories for her children Jerry Ann Ellis of Sun City West, Arizona; Sue (Ron) Beauchene of Yakima; Tom Leonard of Yakima; and Michael Leonard of Shoreline, Washington. She is also survived by a sister, Verla Bunce of Yakima, eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Besides Dad, she was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Mae Hargraves, and three brothers, Theodore, Pete, and LeRoy Beaudry.
We would like to express our appreciation to the Memorial Hospice Services team whose care and attention meant so much these past several months. And to the entire staff of Chandler House you will have a special place in our hearts for the caring, compassion and gentleness you provided to comfort Mom’s final days.
