Dora was born on September 4, 1925, in Bloomington, Nebraska to Francis and Minnie Barnes at the home of Uncle George and Aunt Hattie Schneurle. She came to Tieton, Washington in 1945 after working in the Defense Plant during World War 11. There she met Jacob Herman and they were married on November 5, 1946 in Goldendale. Jake and Dora made their life-long home in Cowiche while raising their five children.
Dora worked alongside Jake, operating Herman’s service station for twenty years. After the station was sold, she went to work for the Highland School District as a cook, a job she dearly loved. She spent many years after her retirement as a volunteer. She especially enjoyed cooking and was excellent at baking. She was a devoted 62 year member of the Highland United Methodist Church. Mom loved her church and her God and all of the people associated with the Church. She was also a long time member of the Rebekah Lodge and served as Noble Grand.
Most of all, she was a devoted mom, grandma and great-grandma. She would put her plans on hold not to miss a birthday or holiday celebration with her family which often included her brothers, sisters and our cousins.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Dema Harris & Steve DeVilbiss of Colville, WA, Dianna and Larry Leitch, Donna and Bill Morris and Denise Woodall of Yakima and John and Denise Herman of Cowiche, 10 grandchildren, George Leitch, Rebecca Harris, Jeffrey Morris, Keith Harris, Jennifer Kenworthy, Ryan Morris, Jonelle Herman, Ashley Woodall, Andrea Woodall and Caitlin Herman; seven great-children, Cody Harris, Austin Harris, Maya Donelson, Izabella Castillo, Mila Kenworthy, Lola Leitch and Bayah Morris. Jacob Leitch and Haylee Herman will join the family in October and November of this year. She is also survived by her sister Mary Lou Schut and brother-in-law Dick of Yakima and brother Bob Barnes and sister-in-law Gladys of Denver, Colorado and many nieces and nephews.
Dora was preceded in death by Jake, her parents, sisters Loretta and Doris and brother LaVerne.
There will be viewing Friday from 4:00 to 8:00pm at Langevin Mussetter Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will be on Saturday, September 17 at 2:00 p.m. at West Hills Memorial Park. A Memorial celebration of Dora’s life will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 14 N. 48th at 3:00 p.m following the graveside service.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, American Cancer Society or Yakima Memorial Hospice.
The family would especially like to recognize and thank Kevin and Breann McLean of Angel Cottage and their staff America and Becky for the loving care given to mom in these past months. You were truly a blessing to our family and mom loved you very much.
