Born and raised in Yakima, she was the only child of Clifford and Edith Wade. She graduated from Davis High School in 1943. After graduation she went to work as a grocery clerk at a grocery store managed by Wray Brown. Wray Brown soon started his own local grocery store, Wray’s Thriftway, and Doris worked for Wray’s Thriftway throughout her working career.
Doris married Jim Rosenkranz in March of 1948 at Yakima’s First Presbyterian Church. The ring bearer at the wedding was Wray’s 4-year-old son Bob Brown, who would later become her employer when he took over his father’s grocery business when he retired. Doris continued to work while their three children were growing up but she took the summer months off from work to enjoy the family’s activities of camping, fishing, boating, and waterskiing. She was an excellent cook and made birthdays and holidays special.
After her husband’s death, at the age of 60, Doris took driving lessons and received her first driver’s license. Her son Ron was a tremendous help in maintaining the family home.
Upon retirement, she remained socially active with her friends, volunteered at the Yakima Greenway, played cards with her monthly pinochle group, and traveled. There were very few trips she took in state or out-of-state that she did not run into one of her former customers at Wray’s Thriftway and they always had to chat.
After the age of 80, although healthy, Doris suffered dementia and her enjoyment of activities diminished. With the help of her family, she was able to remain in her home for 70 years.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband Jim Rosenkranz and her son Ron. She is survived by her daughters Lynn Rosenkranz of Yakima, Lou Ann Rosenkranz and her husband Dan Evich of Edmonds; sister-in-law Betty Rosenkranz, nieces Ruth Rosenkranz, Karen (Bruce) Hull of Yakima, and nephew Steve (Cindy) Rosenkranz of Haifa, Israel.
An open house to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 2-4 p.m. at Keith and Keith Funeral Home in Yakima. A private burial will take place on Monday, February 12, at West Hills Memorial Park. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.keithandkeith.com.
