Dorothy was born on the family dairy ranch in the lower Wenas area north of Selah to Edward (Ted) Cleman and Frances (Watt) Cleman on November 15, 1913. She was the third of four daughters.
Dorothy began her education at the Cleman one-room school house; she graduated from Yakima High School in 1933 and then studied at Washington State College in Pullman until she was called home to help care for her ailing father.
Dorothy met Joseph Edwin (Ed) Hall at Washington State College while attending there.
They were married in 1942 just prior to Ed’s service in England and France during World War II. Upon Ed’s return, the couple moved to Los Angeles where they owned a photography business. Dorothy was the bookkeeper for their business for many years. Two sons, Robert and William completed the family.
After the death of her husband and after living in southern California for over 50 years, Dorothy returned to Yakima in 1997 to be closer to her sisters.
Dorothy was active in mind and body, strong, resilient and fiercely independent, defying the years as they passed. An avid reader, she remained informed of current events and enjoyed a good mystery. Whenever she was asked if she wanted to go somewhere, whether it was for shopping, dining, walking, or playing pinochle, she was always ready!
She was a member of Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church, Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington, and the Yakima Newcomers’ Group.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Edwin Hall and her three sisters, Harriett Elizabeth Cleman (in infancy), Vivien Cleman Turneaure and Jean Cleman Cox. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Robert and Glenice Hall and William and Carol Hall, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate Dorothy’s long and well-lived life will be held on Monday, December 4th at 10:00 a.m. at Meyer Auditorium (Living Care Center). In memoriam gifts may be given to the Daughters of Pioneers of Washington #8 Scholarship fund c/o Keith & Keith Funeral Home; 902 W Yakima Avenue; Yakima, WA. 98902.
