Born in Crookston, MN to Henry & Celina Martell in 1921, “Ellen” married Robert Scully (her neighbor) in 1941 at St. Peters Church in Gentilly, MN. They moved to the Yakima Valley in 1945 with other family members from Minnesota. Mom and Dad resided in an 8’ x 16’ cabin in Naches and did migrant work at local orchards. Dad eventually became an ironworker, and he and mom built a home in North Yakima in the early 1950’s and raised their family.
Mom was a woman of deep faith and prayed consistently for patience while raising their eleven ‘crazy’ kids (who all took after their father). Her home was always the focus of family, with lots of laughter, playing card games, and watching Mariner games. Everyone always felt welcome to her home and knew where the ‘treat’ counter was located, in the kitchen.
She was a devoted member of Catholic Daughters of America, St. Paul’s Church, and YLI.
Highlights of her later life after Dad retired from Northwest Ironworkers, was playing cribbage twice weekly with close friends Lane & Phyllis Woodard, traveling with family, and celebrating the holidays with as many family members who could fit into her house (even hanging out the windows).
Ellen is survived by nine children: Donna (Jim) Kendrick, Jan Hall, Darryl (Sharon) Scully, Joanne Scully, Mike Scully, Keven (Debbie) Scully, Lauren Scully, Bruce (Jill) Scully and Renee McGuire (friend Pat Lawler); 16 grandchildren: Sean (Rachele), Glenda (Kevin), Biff (Kim), Shannon (Dave), Dale (Karen), Jennifer (Chris), Rebecca (Garret), Darren (Karlee), Sara (Jesse), Logan (Liz), Kristen (Anatolio), Justin (Kelsey), Angela (Chris), Morgan (Tyler), Blake, and Madison (Justin). She is also survived by 15 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, along with many beloved nieces and nephews, and sisters in law, Barb and Orella.
Mom was preceded in death by husband Robert, sons Virgil and Gary, three brothers, Francis (Sis) Martell, Benedict (Marge) Martell, and Dan Martell; sons in law Sherwood Hall, and Bruce McGuire, and daughter in law Lynda Scully
