Erika Ilse Jahr

Erika spent her early years with her parents in Handorf, Germany, where she lived until the age of 15. At that time, her father helped her find a job working in the kitchen of a men’s home in Hanover, Germany. Because she had no place to live in Hanover, Erika made the long journey to and from work each day, traveling by streetcar, train and on foot. She continued this routine for several years, demonstrating the determination and work ethic that would become such an important part of her life.

Eventually, Erika was able to move to Hanover when she found a new job near a local butcher shop. It was there, at the age of 19, that she met her future husband, Georg, who worked at the butcher shop. Their relationship blossomed and on the warm summer day of August 28, 1956, Erika and Georg were married.

Their first year of marriage brought the beginning of many new adventures. In May 1957, Erika and Georg moved to Calgary, Canada, where they were soon blessed with a sweet baby boy, Peter.

In February 1963, Erika, Georg, and Peter made another life-changing move, settling in Selah, Washington. It was there that their family grew once again with the arrival of their beautiful daughter, Barbara.

Erika later worked in the fruit packing industry. Roches, where she met Betty Trickey, then to Holtzingers for many years and found many strong friendships there. Erika had the aura about her that made you gravitate towards her and wanted that loving friend that she shared so easily.

In the early 1990s, Erika and Georg began a new chapter when they opened their own business in Selah, "Jahr’s European Sausage". The business became a true partnership. Georg made the sausage while Erika managed the retail side and packaging. Together, they built a successful business that reflected their hard work, dedication and love of their German heritage.

When Erika wasn't working at the shop, she could often be found caring for their picturesque yard. Over the years, their beautiful home and yard became the setting for many weddings, gatherings and special celebrations. Erika took great pride in creating a welcoming and beautiful place for others to enjoy.

Erika also loved going dancing, sharing dinners, traveling with friends and enjoying luncheons with the ladies of the German club. She treasured the friendships she made and the memories they created together.

In her later years, Erika found some of her greatest joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Watching them grow and play in her yard brought her tremendous happiness and gave her many cherished memories to hold onto.

Erika was preceded in death by her parents, Otto Ulbrich and Frieda Pusch; her beloved husband, Georg Jahr; and her son, Peter Jahr.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Jahr; daughter-in-law, Lonni Jahr; grandchildren, Sunni Tapscott (Forrest), Summer Clark (Jason) and Ryan Jahr (Hailee); and multiple great-grandchildren.

Erika leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a family who loved her dearly, and a legacy woven into the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her determination, strength, warmth and love for her family will be remembered for generations to come.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
