Esther Jean Hogan (DeVriend)

Esther Jean Hogan (DeVriend), 85, of Yakima, Washington passed away on August 30th, 2015 at Harborview Hospital in Seattle, Washington, after a brief illness. There will be a celebration of her life on November 13th at Rainier Memorial Center in Yakima.

Esther was a longtime resident of Yakima and loved by many. She was born on July 25th, 1930 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, one of seven children. Her husband, the Honorable James Hogan, preceded her in death in 2010. Her parents were Peter DeVriend and Meta Markus. Two of her siblings, Harry DeVriend and Marion Staege, preceded her in death. She is survived by her other siblings: Jeannette Schilperoort of Sunnyside, WA; John DeVriend of Citrus Heights, CA; Connie Raines of Yakima, WA; and Don DeVriend of Prosser, WA. Esther loved her family and had a special bond with her nieces and nephews. During the week of her illness in Seattle, she had five of her nieces at her bedside, for which the family is most grateful. We will always be thankful and appreciative of the compassion shown by the professionals at Harborview.

The life Esther lived included many chapters of adventures and she was always ready for a new one! She had so many interests and talents. She was a lifelong learner, an avid reader, loved to go on cruises, had varied career experiences, from selling real estate in Alaska to part ownership in a gift store in Yakima years ago. She was a volunteer for years in the Gift Store at Yakima Memorial Hospital, an advocate at heart. She was ahead of her time in many ways, loved fashion, and was always up for fun. A beautiful woman, a beautiful soul…

She was a courageous woman and died in her “Esther” style, with dignity, determination, and thoughtfulness of those who cared for and loved her. Always Esther…

The family is planning a celebration of her life by having a memorial and interment on Friday, November 13th, 2015, at 11:00 AM at Rainier Memorial Center. Please join us if knowing this extraordinary woman made a difference in your life.
