Forrest “Sarge” Hubert Marshall was born in Corvallis, Oregon in 1933. Raised on a farm, he answered the call to duty by joining the US Army in 1956. He served in Korea and Vietnam. His military career included paratrooper, drill sergeant, tank commander, Arctic and Yuma Test Stations, Operations sergeant, and Army advisor to the National Guard in Yakima, Washington. After 20 years Sarge retired as master sergeant with many awards and honors including the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He also received the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel, and later joined the American Legion and the American Highland Cattle Association. Following his military retirement, Sarge returned to his farming roots, working as a fruit orchard foreman, and then manager of Ahtanum Irrigation District. In 1993, he and his son began raising Highland Cattle in West Valley and Sarge continued to farm and ranch until his passing in February 2011.
A loving husband and father, Sarge was married to Corrine for 52 yrs, with two children, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He was an honorable and hard-working man, always willing to help with the task at hand. He had a great sense of humor, sharing jokes and funny stories with family and friends. He was also a good teacher, patiently explaining step by step, and showing you “how to” techniques. When Sarge taught you something, you learned it inside and out. He loved being outdoors, whether it was work or play. He enjoyed working with and operating heavy equipment – tanks, backhoes, and tractors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was always able to catch “the big one” when no one else could. In his retirement, raising cattle and farming hay kept him happily busy, and everyone waved when he rode by on his Honda four wheeler on the way to the fields.
Forrest Marshall is survived by his wife, Corrine Marshal of Yakima, WA; son, George (Kat) Marshall of Moxee, WA; daughter, Sandy (Steve) Marshall-Apodaca of Lake Stevens, WA; two sisters, Beth Hite of Medford, OR, and Ruth (Mel) Baldwin of Ontario, OR; two brothers, Charles (Nancy) Marshall of Portland, OR, and Dan (Marylou) Marshall of Boise, ID; four grandchildren, Paris Apodaca, Paul (Jammie) Bellesen, Rachel Bellesen, Joshua (Crystal) Bellesen; and four great grandchildren, Joey Bellesen, Kiya Bellesen, Jayda Bellesen, and Leya Bellesen.
Sarge was a beloved family man, a good friend to all, and was always there for his family, friends and neighbors. He was a big man, with an even bigger heart. His passing leaves a void in our hearts and lives.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday the 19th of March, 2011, at the Yakima Readiness Center (Army National Guard Armory) 2501 Airport Lane, Yakima, WA. Keith & Keith Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
